Editorial Reviews

"Stoft has provided an incisive, highly-readable roadmap for Democratic success--one that upends the self-destructive political myths unknowingly perpetuated by the party. He exposes how each of these myths has served only to divide the party and provide fodder for Republicans. A must-read for those who are serious about preserving our Democracy." --John Ballard, recipient (along with others) of The Congressional Gold Medal and the NAACP Drum Major for Justice. Mr. Ballard is the author of African-American Consciousness with an introduction by Nelson Mandela.

"Ripped Apart shows exactly how polarization harms us, and why understanding this will help us win. Read this book before it's too late." --Ying Lee Kelley, former legislative aide to Rep. Ron Dellums, founder of the Congressional Black Caucus.

From the Author

Researching Ripped Apart shocked me again and again. I thought that over the years, I'd become pretty realistic about the over-optimism of the far left--which I still identify with when it comes to ideals and goals. But every time I checked into what I thought was a bit of radical exaggeration, I found fabrications. Let me give you just one example.

There's a myth that Joe Biden should apologize for causing massive incarceration of Blacks with his 1994 crime bill. So I checked the National Academies' report on imprisonment. Black incarceration went up less in the five years after the bill than in the two years before. Since then it's been coming down. But White incarceration didn't slow and it kept going another 15 years.

Joe was no racist, his bill was backed by most Blacks including 2/3 of the radical Congressional Black Caucus. That example and a couple of dozen others tell the story: We would beat Trump with ease except for a small group of well-meaning but deluded radicals that is attacking the Democrats from the inside and accidentally handing ammunition to Trump for the dirtiest campaign in American history. There may still be time to stop this calamity.
