This just might not be my genre but I am having a hard time getting thru this book. To the mind of a researcher, I am sure it holds fascination. As for me, I seem to get sleepy after 3-4 pages, sometimes force reading until the end of a chapter so that I can feel like I have made some headway.

I am a Patricia Cornwell fan and I was hoping she could make the Ripper research into a good read.

Sorry Patricia, but I am still a fan and will continue to buy your books!

I was enjoying the book until chapter 31, My Kindle will not allow me to continue past chapter 30 and it's only this book, when I called for help I got none sooooooo I'll never complete the book...... Thanks Kindle. Just an update, I received a call from Amazon support about this problem and a young man went over what was happening explaining it was looked into and waited while I checked it on my Fire. Shocked to get a call at home....yes.....happy about the service...absolutely. Thank you Amazon service.

I've been interested in reading this book since I first learned of it years ago. I'm glad that I didn't until the revised edition was published.

What I liked best about the book was its underlying premise: what might have been learned about Jack the Ripper had modern investigative techniques and methods been available 100+ years ago? It's an intriguing question and Cornwell pursued it well.

What I liked least about the book was its structure. Perhaps it's due to it being a second edition that took a number of years to complete, the incidents described by Cornwell in the Coda, or other factors but I found the book's flow to be awkward. Not strictly chronological or topical but with elements of both in a manner that made me feel as if I were being led by someone who had a faitly good idea of where she's headed but only a vague idea of the best route to take.

That said, I recommend the book to others like me, who both enjoy Cornwell's work and have some interest in Jack the Ripper.

I love Patricia Cornwell writing but his is not her writing style at all. for those like me who like her story line a Dr. Kay Scarpeta don't waste your money or time. I did not finished it. She did not use the same reader either so it made it worse. I bought the audio version so I could not even return it. I will wait for her next book of her usual style and get if from my local library to be sure it her crime/suspense/mystery book.

A research-filled investigation into the "Jack the Ripper" mystery. Although I appreciate how many facts and detail were revealed, I found that the descriptions of the violence that the victims suffered overwhelmed me. I did finish the book, but it left me quite unsettled.

Gripping drama of the life of English artist Walter Sickert, who was described as being a potential person who might have become the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper. Many police reports and historical details were included to add depth to the story. Interesting reading, very likely scenario. Ms. Cornwell's ability to construct a story from history is always very compelling. Worthwhile reading.

I read her earlier book on the Ripper which was excellent. This one is way much more than I ever wanted to know about the Ripper and that era in London. I quit after 100 pages. It was really good therapy for my insomnia.

Cromwell applies modern forensics to the Jack the Ripper mystery. She builds a case of circumstantial evidence bolstered with scientific analysis to conclude that artist Walter Sickert had the motive, means, and opportunity to commit these crimes. The analysis of the paper used in the Ripper notes is most compelling. Completely thorough, Cornwell writes a nonfiction accounts as mesmerizing any of her fiction.

An acceptable return for the investment of the purchase price. Two stars worth to sort of the BS conclusions based on very suspicious "facts" and assumptions. If you don't need that type of mental exercise than don't waste any money on this book!

So boring I didn't finish it...... too much repetition and speculation. An article in an encyclopedia would be more exciting to read.
