I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Alix is a fun heroine and her compatriots make for an interesting and engaging set of personalities. I found the romance aspect of the book to be a bit tiresome because it's based on the overused trope of capital-F "Forbidden Love" though, thankfully, it's not one of the more predominant themes in the book, which focuses more on the action and growth of the characters. There are a few major twists that are very well handled. I didn't see them coming, but when they did, the author had done a good job of laying the groundwork for them so that they didn't feel like something that just came out of nowhere. I also liked how the story makes use of the history several of the characters share and how that history plays into their growth through the events of the book.
If you're looking for a good, witchy urban fantasy this one should did quite nicely.
This was such a fast paced adventure, seriously blink and you might miss something. I found myself reading the book in one sitting because it was easy to get sucked into the story and the writing was very approachable. The book (as per my ereader) was a little less than 200 Pages but still Sierra was able to build a complete world, with detailed characters and a crazy plot. There were so many twists and turns that kept me on my toes, most I could never have guessed at. At least three separate times I gasped out loud because I was so surprised by the shocking event that Sierra just threw at Alix's feet. I don't normally associate shocks and surprises with urban fantasy stories, but I found Rise to be up their with out of nowhere reveals.
Can we just take a minute to talk about how perfect Matt and Alix are for each other? Yes folks, there is a forbidden love here and it is so heartbreaking (one of the top 3 things that felt like my heart was being ripped out for Alix during the book!). Alix is part of the witch coven (sort of) and Matt is part of the Brotherhood that has sworn to protect the witches- but it is forbidden for the two to have any sort of romantic relationship. Gawd, I just wanted Matt to throw his ridged ruled out the window and Make Alix his... but yeah, we can't always get what we want.
Rise is the first book in a series of five, so don't expect the story to be wrapped up in a nice little bow- this is just the start of some serious action to come. I found myself really liking and rooting for Alix and all that she has endured and I want nothing but the best for her... but I am afraid nothing will go according to a simple plan. I don't know what Sierra has up her sleeve to put in Alix's path next, but I am pretty certain it won't be easy and I can't wait to read more.
