In Rise of the Black Serial Killers: Documenting a Startling Trend, Justin Cottrell expels the myth that serial killers in America are predominately white. On the contrary after sifting through a myriad of newspaper records and books, he's compiled a list of murderers that is equal too or greater than the number of white serial killers from 1860 to present. Few if any have ever heard any of their names or stories, until now. Based on his findings white serial killers have been underrepresented throughout American history when compared to the percentage of the population they represent by a factor of 1.79 on average. On the other hand, black serial killers have been overrepresented 2.68 to 7 times their portion of the population, with a 150 year average of 4.18. Another startling trend he uncovered is black serial killers have never represented less than 26.83% of the number of serial killers in a given decade, despite their overall percentage of the population never exceeding 13.1%. This trend has steadily increased to the point that in our current decade they represent 88.24% of the number of serial killers apprehended since 2010, yet only account for 12.6% of the populace.

Aside from trends, this book offers reasons most people assume black serial killers don't exist--from the media prohibition on the subject, to general misunderstandings. Coupled with this is a look into the various factors that breed serial killers, with a look into why black serial killers are on the rise, while white serial killers are on the decline.

To prove his research is valid, a full list of every black serial killer is provided, along with a brief description of their crimes. In addition to this the biographies of 35 of these killers are given, with detailed information about their crimes.

This book establishes these surprising facts:
1. Since Emancipation, there have been numerous black serial killers in the United States.
2. Comparing decades since 1860, black serial killers have never been less than 26% of all American serial killers.
3. In the early decades of the 20th Century, black serial killers comprised the majority of American serial killers and, since the year 2000, have comprised over 80%.
4. Over 58% of American black serial killers murdered outside their ethnicity, compared to 5.9% of American white serial killers who did.
5. One third of American black serial killers exclusively slew whites.
The above facts are so surprising to so many for two principal reasons. One is the popular-culture belief, fueled by faulty criminal profiling, that only whites possess the mental makeup to be serial killers. The other reason is that the news media, fueled by overzealous political correctness, seldom inform the public about black serial killers. These problems are examined in the first two chapters.
The bulk of the book is composed of crime-trend statistics, lists of suspects, felons, and victims, 35 biographies, and over 100 pages of criminal profiles of individuals, duos, and gangs. Dispersed throughout the narrative are around 55 small black-and-white photos of the killers.
Though it obviously lacked the best editing, this book is written in generally smooth prose with good punctuation and very few typos. There are numerous endnotes, a bibliography, and an index.
For anyone interested in the subject of black serial killers, this work is a handy, well organized resource. For the public in general, it can be a vital eye-opener.

The other reviewers are right, there are a lot of spelling and grammatical mistakes, but if you can get past that, this is a fantastic read! I thought I knew a lot about serial killers, but apparently I've been fooled by the media. This book was engaging, and based on facts (all of the facts are clear and supported). This is not an opinion-based book, but a factually based one, and that's why I like it. I couldn't put it down!

I decided to take a look at the non typical suspects. I never knew there were so many serial killers that were black. I grew up assuming that it was a white thing to be a serial killer. I now believe it's in the genes and not based on color. Interesting book.

Good book but just couldn't continue.

I have read through one third of this book but had to stop. It just got me so upset that I couldn't continue. I myself have been the victim of three violent crimes all committed by young black males. And just on the date of my writing this review, another black serial killer appears to have been exposed. This one in connection with the disappearance of the female UVA student. Forensic evidence connects him to the murder of a Virginia Tech student. We also had the rape and murder of Maggie Daniels here in NC by a smirking black male, and the robbery and murder of UNC Chapel Hill Student President Eve Carson by two black male. When will it stop? Never.
I'll stop here, because I think that even Amazon would have to censor additional comments I might write.

This book thoroughly destroys the myth that white people constitute an exclusive or disproportionate number of serial killers. The facts are exactly the opposite. It is blacks, not whites, who are more likely to be serial killers. The author proves this by drawing on a huge body of evidence from many decades. What also is exposed is the media's almost complete lack of interest in reporting on black serial killers and this is the principle reason why the popular myth about white serial killers exists.
