The author of the book, originally published in 1903 I believe, used some vocabulary with which I was unfamiliar. I was glad to have the Kindle edition allowing me quick access to dictionary definitions.
The flavor of this book is historical, but the history addressed is detailed to the point that I greatly enjoyed it.
A work written from the heart.
I do miss the refrences though. No footnotes or bibliography included in this edition.
The story of the conversion of an a-political group of literate believers, guided by an inner light, into an armed revolutionary force is told from the perspective of later European social developments that maintained their own illusions about the new creation. Thses, in turn, would not always be benign.
Excuses are made for the betrayal of the pacifist principles of the early anabaptists. The excuses themselves betray the principles on which their beliefs were founded. They are reasonable enough only if you deny the truth of what was originally said.
