About the Author

Prior to his assignment as director of the chief of staff's staff group at Headquarters United States Air Force in April 1997, Col R. Michael Worden was commander of the 354th Operations Group at Eielson Air Force Base (AFB), Alaska. The 354th Group oversees a squadron of night vision goggle-equipped A/OA-10s, and a squadron of LANTIRN-equipped F-16s and Pacific Air Forces Cope Thunder large forces employment exercises. This squadron provides air forces trained and equipped for close air support, air interdiction, and offensive counterair. Colonel Worden is a distinguished graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado, receiving a bachelor's degree there in 1976. He was also named an outstanding graduate after completing pilot training at Reese AFB, Texas, in 1977. Colonel Worden graduated from the Squadron Officer School, Maxwell AFB, Alabama, in 1983 and Maxwell's Air Command and Staff College in 1988. Duke University conferred upon him a master's degree in military history in 1986 and a doctor of philosophy degree in the same area in 1993. Earlier, in 1991, he participated in Operations Desert Storm and Provide Comfort, the allied effort to establish no-fly zones over Kurdish refugees in Northern Iraq.
