Based on William Joyce's the Guardians of Childhood book series, Rise of the Guardians is a gorgeously animated film about Boogeyman Pitch Black's attempts to spread darkness and fear throughout the world and the guardians' attempts to foil him. Charged with the duty of watching over the children of the world, guardians Sandman, North, Tooth, and E. Aster Bunnymund are loved by children everywhere. When the Man in the Moon appoints Jack Frost to be the newest guardian, the other guardians doubt that Jack can be of much help against Pitch, especially considering that the children don't even believe in Jack Frost's existence. But when Pitch prevents Tooth from collecting the children's teeth, keeps E. Aster Bunnymund from hiding eggs on Easter, and turns the children's happy dreams into nightmares, the guardians realize that they're going to need all the help they can get. The children stop believing in the guardians one by one, and the question that remains is what can one fun-loving, somewhat immature boy with the power to freeze everything he touches possibly do to counteract the fear and darkness enveloping the world? The animation effects are excellent in this film--especially the images of frost and ice spreading across ponds and windowpanes. The characters are interestingly quirky, the action is constant and well paced, and the considerable voice talent includes Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Jude Law, Isla Fisher, and Hugh Jackman. A familiarity with the books aids deeper understanding of characters like North and Sandman, but viewers unfamiliar with the books will have no problem enjoying this film. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

We are introduced to the fun spirit of cold and winter Jack Frost in a beautiful movie that is both funny and moving. Basically the Man on The Moon calls upon the Guardians of Childhood: Santa Claus, The Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, and the Sandman to have Jack Frost aid them against Pitch Dark AKA The Boogeyman, who is loose again to threaten children's dreams.
Everyone will love this movie not just children but many adults and even teenagers too. The story is engaging and is well balanced between the action and dramatic and funny parts, there is NEVER a dull moment in the movie, that's how well paced and well edited it is. Movie storytelling at its best!
Dreamworks Studios has created a true masterpiece that can be enjoyed again and again and proves that is not necessary to make a musical out of every children's story in order to be enjoyable.
DVD includes interviews with all main actors talking about their roles, (all well known celebrities) commentary by the producers and director.
Truly a modern classic. It is a MUST have in your DVD collection!
It's odd that here on Amazon the DVD is currently 10.99 yet to stream it is 13.99. It's usually cheaper to stream a movie to a computer than it is to buy it on DVD. This is the first time I have seen this with a movie listed here on Amazon. So don't bother streaming it. Just buy yourself the DVD. It's worth it.
Thank you to the cast, production team, and everyone involved for bringing a little bit of light, to these pitch-black times.
As a mom, I appreciate the fact that this film is free of the crudeness and potty talk that most kids' movies are riddled with.
By way of caution, the "bad guy" in this story could be a bit too scary if your child is very sensitive. Nothing gruesome or violent, but could still be scary for little people nonetheless.
He was scared of Pitch at first but I talked to him about it and we finished the movie and now he just says Pitch is angry.
I love that it embodies the magic of being a kid.

Firstly, the animation. The animation is absolutely stunning. The way that the light streams through windows, and bounces off objects and characters... It's beautiful. Even moonlight, and subtle candlelight is so nice to look at, you forget that there isn't an actual moon hanging in a sky on the screen. The animation is smooth, and expressive, and characters actually feel like people you care about in our world, they have personalities and depth! You want the Guardians to succeed in their endeavours and feel for them when they struggle.
And the story, even though it's a kids film, I really think is paced in such a way that anyone can enjoy it. My 24 year old brother enjoyed it just as much as my 46 year old mother. It really does transcend ages and gender - it can raise a laugh, a smile, even a tear at points.
It is truly everything that can be enjoyed in any film. If you want a good, enjoyable time watching a feel good movie, which the whole family can really enjoy then watch this. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Other than that it is a beautiful film and can be watch at special times of the year like Christmas or Easter, as special family day film.
