Editorial Reviews

What first stirred in the heart and soul of man, deep in the night and twilight of obscure caves and woods, back when the ear was an organ of fear and survival?
Does man express himself through music or does music express itself through man?

The Doctor knows, but he ain't saying--or rather, he just said it, chapter and verse. Listen close now, cos you can follow the doctor's advice, but you can't follow the Doctor.

Ian Jackson

Lonnie has been at the forefront of the jazz scene since he was named Top Organist by Downbeat Magazine in 1969. Recently, Lonnie was voted the Organ Keyboardist of the Year in 2003, 2004 and 2005 by the Jazz Journalist Association.

Dr Lonnie Smith's latest release, RISE UP! features Peter Bernstein, guitar; Herlin Riley, drums; Donald Harrison, alto sax with guest musicians Matt Balitsaris, guitars, James Shipp, percussion and Jo Lawry, vocals.

It's always a great occasion when Lonnie Smith announces the fact of an upcoming new CD. It's even more special when Lonnie records with a noted sax player. Such is the case with the upcoming CD, Rise Up! on Palmetto Records. We've obtained an advance copy and it is quite impressive. Lonnie recently played at Jimmy Maks' jazz club in Portland, Oregon, on tour with Donald Harrison. Several of the tracks on Rise Up were introduced that night - A Matterapat, Come Together, And the World Weeps come to mind - and the buzz of excitement that Smith elicited that night are brought to fruition with his new CD.

A Matterapat sets the stage for what's to come as Donald Harrison provides the perfect foil for Lonnie as he blows pure funk while drummer, Herlin Riley, and percussionist Shipp swirl with cymbals and cowbell. Bernstein has several tasty choruses before Lonnie takes over the groove. Come Together follows and you've never heard it funkified like this as the Good Doctor grunts out vocalisms while churning out Hammond runs.

Pilgrimage is a visit to a Sunday church service, and Harrison is extra soulful in a relaxed groove. Amen ... More sweetness follows with Dapper Dan and the drum/percussion mix, as well as more Bernstein guitar deserve special mention. And the World Weeps is taken at a mournful crawl as Riley taps out a snare beat, while Peter Bernstein and Donald Harrison add to the procession. You can imagine this track being played at funeral tribute.

People Make the World Go Round lightens the mood as the Turbinator and Harrison share the melody. Sweet Dreams is a psychedelic trip to funky slumber; again proof that bringing a sax into the mix really adds a soulfulness that the Hammond-guitar-drum trio sometimes lacks.

I just love "The Turbinator"! This veteran group is so polished and poised that the complex feels and grooves come off super-relaxed. All of the different New Orleans grooves are featured here with a few new ones. The stellar Jazz guitar of Peter Bernstein and Sax of Donald Harrison just can't be improved on. Masterful drummer Herlin Riley delivers fresh grooves with precision and grace. Smith's organ pedal work rattles the windows! He spanks the B-3 the way it should be played. Fiery one minute, subtle and tasteful the next. Full of surprises. His use of percussion patches is unsurpassed.

Front to back this is a fantastic album. It has a little bit of everything but done with Dr Lonnie's mystical style. He takes you on a journey within the song and takes a song you may know and brings it to life in a new way that makes it sound familiar but original. This is the must have album in the world of funky organ music!

Like most jazz, not so great when you're just driving around, but if you have time to actually listen to it, and get into it, this CD is awesome if you like jazz.

Lonnie is real playing excellent on this CD. The jive, soulfeel, is taking you totally into his music, especially track 2&3.
