Editorial Reviews

Probably one of the hardest things for an established rock band to do is replace their lead singer. For every act that has successfully accomplished this daunting task (AC/DC, Van Halen, etc.), there are countless others that have failed. Upon hearing Saliva's eighth studio album, Rise Up, you can now add the band to the former category. New singer Bobby Amaru has successfully replaced original singer Josey Scott (who exited the group in 2012), and has joined up with longtime members Wayne Swinny (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Dave Novotny (bass, backing vocals), and Paul Crosby (drums), and has helped deliver an album that manages to push the band's sound into new areas, as well as retaining the group's trademark elements - including anthemic choruses and crushing riffs. "That would be Paul contacted me," is how Amaru recalls first getting in touch with the band. "But it was through this guy Jeff that we know - a mutual friend. He used to do lights for the band. He does lights for so many other acts, like Godsmack and Limp Bizkit. But he lives in Jacksonville - he's actually right around the corner from me. And we hung out a lot and stuff, so he just called me up and said that they were looking for a singer and if it was OK to give Paul my number. And that's how that happened."

With acclaimed producer Bobby Huff (Papa Roach, 3 Doors Down, Tim Finn) on board, all the pieces seem to be in place. And Saliva has delivered with their new single, "Rise Up." "'Rise Up' ...it's a statement on where we're at," adds Swinny. "The title just has that fire to it."

And if you are a longtime Saliva fan, you are sure to be extremely pleased with the full-length 'Rise Up' - a bold record full of big hooks, swagger and plenty of guitars. And, outside of the ballad "Lost," it's first and foremost a rock record. These are songs that kick hard, from the immediacy of the aforementioned "Rise Up," to the slow build of "Choke," and the rollickin' "Redneck Freakshow," a song the band seems particularly proud of.

One of the first things that might come to mind is what the heck is the difference between this and Saliva's album In It To Win It released in Sept 2013. As far as I can tell, nothing, other than a reordering of the songs, and three fewer songs, "Animal", "Flesh", and "I.D.N.A.E." I cannot tell you why this was done, and I cannot recall seeing it done before. The songs are not any different, aren't remixed, as far as I can tell. Perhaps they liked the song order better.

The new vocalist seems to have meshed well with Saliva's sound. The songs are pretty rockin' hard rock songs with Rise Up being the best song IMHO. Fewer are the slower ballady song's that were on Under Your Skin, which I consider a good thing. Most likely if you liked previous Saliva releases, you'll like this one.

This is actually a publicly released album of a rare touring record called in it to win it. Bobby is replacing Josey Scott on vocals. Bobby use to be drummer for the band Burn Season. As well as singer for his underground solo band Amaru. A incredible singer. Brings life band back into a band which really needed a boost. His vocals aren't like josey. But he has more heavy music to work with in this incarnation. Not the every six seconds saliva we remember. Of course the band lingered from that style. Now they hit a more distinctive style. More polished, with a newer generation feel. You either will like it or hate it. At first I thought it sounded like papa roach but had listen more closer.

This is the very first time I bought any music from this group. I like it a lot. I have listened to part of Saliva compact disc. on different occasions on amazon. This album has got me interested in listening to other compact disc. from this group. My hope is that there other CD'S sound as good as this one did. There music is good sounding hard rock. It is good and I recommend it to others.

Didn't think I was going to like it with a new singer, but Bobby Amaru quickly won me over. He does an outstanding job on all of the songs, but especially on No One But Me, Rise Up and The Enemy. There isn't a song on the entire album that I want to fast forward through.

If you didn't read my review for the previous version of this album, which was released under the title IN IT TO WIN IT, let me go more in depth than I did last time. First off, they cut out three of the songs, which could count as a flaw that this album has, but my theory on the matter is that they either wanted this album to be much more cohesive, or they wanted to fit less tracks on the physical release. That being said, the tracks on this album have grown on me a lot more than they previously have, particularly tracks like CHOKE, 1000 EYES, the title track, and THE ENEMY. Like I said when I reviewed IITWI, SALIVA is becoming a much better band than they were with albums such as UNDER YOUR SKIN, BLOOD STAINED LOVE STORY, and of course CINCO DIABLO.

This is a fantastic album by Saliva. The new singer is awesome & has a great set of pipes. Very melodic like their last album. Great song writing & great vocals highlight this album.
