From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-On the run from two powerful Cabals that want to control their supernatural abilities, Maya Delaney and company are struggling to find the answers they need to master their powers, to make sense of their situation and determine whom they can trust. Following a lead, they discover Maya's twin brother, Ash, who is gifted but not a shape-shifter like Maya. He is able to share some key information that convinces her and her friends that they must fight the Cabals to regain some semblance of normalcy. In this conclusion to the trilogy, Armstrong expertly weaves an action-packed plot full of intrigue and suspense with a dynamic cast of characters. Readers will identify with the issues of friendship, trust, belonging, and betrayal, and with Maya's emotional turmoil over her feelings for Rafe and Daniel. A captivating read that includes a stunning conclusion featuring characters from Armstrong's "The Darkest Powers" trilogy (HarperCollins).-Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NYα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

Skinwalker Maya Delaney, adopted Native American star student and athlete, grew up on a tiny island near Vancouver in a protected community, attending a specialized private school and glorying in her close friendships and the beautiful natural surroundings. When she realized her paw-shaped birthmark actually meant she could change into a cougar, she also learned that she and other young people with her abilities had been raised as research subjects. Having spent most of the second book running from pursuers, Maya and her friends turn and fight in this final volume of the Darkness Rising trilogy, challenging the two powerful cabals hunting down the paranormal teenagers. There are plot twists galore and an overly full cast of characters, which unfortunately means Maya’s first-person narrative is necessarily heavy on explanations, deflating the more authentic teen voice of earlier titles. However, romance readers will enjoy the predictable yet satisfying resolution of Maya’s conflicted romance, and action fans will savor the many cinematic moments, as the teens evade their pursuers, plot revenge, and settle family differences, all the while continuing to develop their special powers. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: This title wraps up the New York Times best-selling Darkness Rising trilogy (The Gathering, 2011; The Calling, 2012) with an impressive national marketing campaign that includes a book trailer. Grades 7-11. --Debbie Carton

I enjoyed this series, maybe not as much as the Woman of the Other world series but I did enjoy it. What made it a three star instead of a four or a five star for me was that I read three books watching Maya insist that she loved Rafe and not Daniel and waiting for her to realise how much Daniel loves her then when she finally does and she also realises that she live him in return the spends like a paragraph disposing of the relationship between Maya and Rafe and then maybe two pages on Maya and Daniel finally getting together. I would have also liked to see a little more of the group's new life in their new town. The series was pretty intense and action packed but the closing feel pretty flat. I hope that the author does something better with the closing of her other series that have many many more books so therefore I have spent much more time on.

I was so excited for this book and it turned out to be just...meh.
I am a huge fan of the original series and the previous two books in this series, and I'm sad that it ended on such a dull note.

Like most of Armstrong's books, this story bolts out of the starting gate and never looks back. One of the things I enjoy about this author is that there is usually little to no time lag in between installments and the pace and storyline picks up right where you left it. This book is no different.

Maya, a teenager with a newly discovered cougar shapeshifting ability, is on the run with friends Corey and Daniel. They are fleeing after finding out that the small, sheltered and remote community they grew up in was little more than a large experiment for breeding kids with special powers. The experiment was about to come to an abrupt end and their parents have been captured and told that the kids have died in a helicopter crash. They are on their own. Now two rival Cabals, powerful supernatural families set up like large corporations, are seeking them to find ways to exploit their abilities. Will they be able to trust someone from the outside world for help? Perhaps they will be retaken by the Cabal they escaped from or found by the rival group looking to seize an asset. Either way, they are in for some close calls and readers are going to get plenty of suspense!

There is nary a break in the action in this whole series and it is hard to put this book down once you get started. One of the great world building techniques the Armstrong draws from is the ability to bring in supernaturals from her other books for guest appearances and weave them into the story. I was just dying for this to happen all throughout this trilogy and was finally rewarded for my wait in this final book. The characters are well written and likeable and leave you wanting to know more even at the end. I sure hope there are more adventures planned for these characters!

I was looking forward for this third and final book in the series. But the fresh and exiting story from the first book and somewhat second book, just does'ent cut in this book. Sad to say this book is Heavy, repetetive and dull

This book still had me yearning for more from this series. I really did enjoy the book, but yet I felt there were still many questions and holes that needed to be filled.

The love triangle between Daniel and rafe was a little bit strained at some parts, but I am glad that she ended up with __________. (Lol I can't spoil it for you).

I wish we got to see the relationship between ash, maya and their dad develop more than what occurred.

Overall, it was a fun, suspenseful, paranormal, y.a. series.

This book was just amazing! I always love getting back into a familiar story, and one I really enjoy being in, at that. I've been highly anticipating this one and it did not disappoint! I'm just really sad that it's over :(

The story was just great! There's something about the stories Kelley writes about teenagers with supernatural powers running away from evil people that I just absolutely love! Okay, I know what that something is: Action! And tons of it! In fact, The Rising started off with fast paced action the sucked me in and would not let me go until the story was told! I also loved the fact the despite the situation Maya and her friends were in, I swear, I was laughing like every other page! I love books with humor :)

And then the characters... so many diverse characters and we even get to see some new ones! But even though we have SO many characters, it is not overwhelming, and that is nice!

Ash, oh my gods, love! Under all that jerk-like exterior he really is a sweet guy. And then there's Daniel... I ADORE Daniel! I like Rafe okay, but I am totally Team Daniel! He is just the sweetest, and as you may know, I have a soft spot for sweet guys ;) THe one character that really ended up surprising me was Antone. I seriously HATED the guy... the vil bastard! But after this book... I don't know what to think. I wont say I like him, but my perspective on him has certainly changed. Oh and don't even get me started on the fact the the Darkest Powers crew is BACK!! Eeeep! I was very excited to read this book, specifically for this reason! It was just amazing seeing these old characters we know and love interact with the new characters we've become fond of. I seriously love cross-overs like this :)

I thought the ending was satisfactory and yet unusual.
