Rising Sun Over Burma: Flying Tigers and Wild Eagles, 1941-1942 - How Japan Remembers the Battle (Tales of the Flying Tigers Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

In December 1941, the Japanese Imperial Army came ashore on the British colony of Malaya. To support that invasion, its air force began to raid neighboring Burma and especially its seaport and capital city of Rangoon, protected by a weak squadron of Royal Air Force Brewster Buffaloes and an untested squadron of P-40s flown by the American Volunteer Group of mercenary pilots hired by China. The battle of Rangoon would soon make them famous as the "Flying Tigers." They were hailed in the west as a triumph of outnumbered men and obsolete machine against overwhelming odds--"like rowboats against the Spanish Armada," in the words of one historian. But what was the truth of these air battles? In the course of writing his definitive history of the American Volunteer Group, Daniel Ford spent a year translating Japanese documents, histories, and memoirs of the air war in Southeast Asia. Here for the first time is the Japanese side of that great battle, as it is remembered in Japan to this day. Essential reading for every fan of the Flying Tigers. (About 20,000 words. Revised and updated December 2021.)

Daniel Ford has spent a lifetime studying and writing about the wars of the past hundred years, from Ireland's war of liberation to America's invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. A U.S. Army veteran and a reporter in Vietnam, he wrote the novel that was filmed as 'Go Tell the Spartans', starring Burt Lancaster. As a historian, he is best known for his prize-winning study of the American Volunteer Group--the gallant 'Flying Tigers' of the Second World War. Most recently, he has written a memoir of his life so far: "Looking Back From Ninety: The Depression, the War, and the Good Life that Followed." I have for some time now been looking for a detailed, yet readable description of the Japanese Army Air Force's (JAAF) operations in the first years of the Pacific War. Mr. Ford's work, "Rising Sun Over Burma" fit the bill perfectly. I found it a somewhat easier, yet at times a more detailed read than Mr. Craven and Cate's works. I have been a fan of the seven volume, "THE ARMY AIR FORCES In World War II" for many years. But Mr. Ford's work brings a level of detail to an area, as of yet, not well published in the West. For this reason I can wholeheartedly recommend his work to anyone desiring insight into the early years of the JAAF. I finished it in one sitting and left informed, and satisfied my time had been well spent. Now for volume 2 Mr. Ford!

I bought this book thinking it contains anecdotes of the war as told by Japanese aviators/soldiers: "How Japan Remembers the Battle". That's the sub-title,right? No it's just a fact sheet of the early part of the war as told by an
Anglo. Very disappointed.

Interesting to the point article. Low on patriotic drivel, high on factual comment. Very useful for those interested in air warfare.
