From the Author
Imagine you could learn an interesting subject while learning the Italian language that conveys it...How would that be?
With this book I wanted to create an Italian course that teaches you not only the language but also mental training.
Is it an interesting subject? I'll let you judge for yourself, but for now let me tell you what athletes have been doing with mental training.
They have been using it for decades to reach their goals, to acquire and practise motor skills, rehearse routines to create muscle memory, and develop a greater sense of awareness.
Now, imagine that you could learn and use these techniques to learn Italian faster...how would that be?
And then, once you have learned them, what about using these techniques in other fields of your interest?
Buon risveglio a tutti! ;-)
About the Author
Antonio Libertino is a widely experienced teacher who has also learned English and German. In fact he loves language and cultures, both Italian and foreign, and for this reason he took the Ditals (the certificate for teaching Italian to foreigners issued by the Università per stranieri di Siena), the Certificate of Advanced English and went to Ferrero in Frankfurt to learn German in the winter of 2003. There he ate three kilos of Nutella (Italian creamy chocolate) in three months but he didn't put on too much weight. Now he teaches Italian to foreigners, adults and youngsters from every nationality and runs his Bed and Breakfast, near Tropea, his beloved home town.

I am enjoying listening to the audio while following the text in both Italian and English. I am feeling confident as I understand the audio and be able to speak it while understanding the meaning of the sentences.
Molto gracie, Antonio
As a course of guided meditations, if you use the accompanying audio files (you must download them but they're free), which are provided in both blended English/Italian and in Italian-only versions to accommodate on your levels of competence, with the book as a text reference Antonio's beautiful, hypnotic voice will guide you to delicious relaxation and powerful absorption of the "material", which is to say, vocabulary, syntax, pronunciation, accents, and phrasing of any and all Italian he speaks.
As a language course, the book offers intermediate to advanced vocabulary that is sophisticated, enlightened, and relevant to our modern sensibility; by that I mean, it recognizes and incorporates mental conditioning and the use of conscious intention as essential components of accelerated learning. Antonio employs guided imagery and mental training to increase confidence and competence in reading, understanding, and speaking Italian. Each lesson includes the guided meditation, insights that support its content, a point of grammar, and questions to answer in Italian. A rich and valuable supplement to the book is Antonio's blog, which compliments the lessons and provide additional material to read and practice with. And as if that weren't enough, he also offers a free podcast series that provides the entire blog content in audio format; so even more material to listen to and practice with. (By the way, Antonio has adapted the book as an English course for Italians and he provides a parallel blog and podcast series in English to benefit his Italian learners, too.)
As for mental training, although the course successfully applies mental training to learning and speaking Italian, once you learn it you can apply it to any activity whose outcome you want to influence. Those activities can range from preparing for an important conversation to training for the performance of any skill, be it athletic, artistic, or professional. Antonio has synthesized in his unique style the information, approaches, and techniques that enable and support mental training, which would otherwise take a long time and a lot of reading to assimilate on one's own and then presents it all in way that is easy to understand and master.
My one, fairly trivial caveat about the book is that, while instruction in a discipline (mental training) within a discipline (learning Italian) renders the course more valuable, it also makes it more challenging. Whereas in his other course, Speak Italian Magically, or in another grammar book the objective is solely to learn Italian, here you're leveraging Italian to learn and practice mental training. What this meant for me was that the last couple of lessons required more time and practice than I was expecting; not just to absorb but even to finish listening to. Be prepared to spend more time with the text as you work with the increasingly complex visualizations and their progressively longer audio files. Granted, I'm only talking about a few minutes (for comparison, lesson 1's Italian-only audio track is 7 minutes, lesson 5's is 18 minutes), but if you're studying and practicing daily, as I do, economy feels like a good friend. I wasn't able to practice both the Italian and the visualizations in the last two lessons and be economical with my time. But then again, I'm not a patient learner.
In summary, I enthusiastically recommend this book to students of Italian for its modern approach and relevant content. It offers a refreshing, engaging alternative to traditional grammars. I also recommend Antonio as a teacher (contact him via his website if you want to arrange for lessons) and his other books as aids in learning Italian. I am a big fan of his approach and how far his methods advance the student before the first lesson even begins. Besides which, he offers all kinds of value-adds and he strives mightily to deliver satisfaction through results and more: a pleasurable learning experience.
What you won't find in this book are dialogues, vocabulary lists, and grammar drills. Instead, and more importantly, you will find well thought-out lessons in mental training. In a progressive manner, you will visualize yourself becoming a competent, confident Italian speaker. While learning these skills, you will internalize the Italian used in the carefully constructed text and clearly spoken audio supplement. Since these materials are available in both bilingual and "only Italian" versions, your Italian will benefit whether you are a beginner or advanced learner. Antonio believes in your inner Italian and so should you!
