RIT dye Colorstay really works!

Being a hairdresser, I tend to wear a lot of black. I also wash my clothing frequently- working with chemicals and hair clippings gets messy- and although I use special detergent designed for dark clothing in cold water, black has a tendency to fade, so a few times a year I do a dyebath for all of my black clothing.
It used to be that they would look great- sharp & dark- until I washed them a few times, then the dye would fade back out. Until I came across THIS product! The RIT dye colorstay fixative really helps to extend the life of the dye, I’d say by double at least. Just follow the instructions and enjoy the results! One more thing I’ve found is that when I would dry freshly dyed clothing, there would be a grayish stain left on the inside of the dryer, but that doesn’t happen anymore since I’ve started using the Colorstay!
I’ve seen some negative reviews for this product but if you follow the directions I bet it’ll work just as well for you.

Using it ruined the dye project.

I dyed a few dresses and a shirt in an ombre pattern using RIT Purple dye following the instructions exactly. After having rinsed them till the water ran clean (like an hour later), then I immediately used the dye fixative as directed and the dye apparently ran and bled back onto the project while stirring it in the fixative. Now everything is just the same color. I was so dissapointed after all the work of making the omber gradient to have it ruined. I don't currently know if the dye will be at all aided in it's colorfastness during was cycles but it did cause the dye to bleed using the product as directed. If they had been all one color then this wouldn't have been a noticeable issue. When I've dyed things with RIT in the past they bleed a lot so I'm hoping that this will still reduce some of that but the items were all fantastic looking ombre pieces before going in the fixative and now are all one solid color. I would think it would bleed in tie dyed fabric as well as spot dying and ombre dyed pieces. I used the boiling water method which it recommended as the best method. Once added to the boiling water I believe it caused a lot of the dye to come out of the fabric and then redeposit on the lighter parts of the fabric. I wonder if it wouldn't be better to dry the object first and then try to put it into the fixative bath... maybe that would help?

My husband is a Firefighter, and someone cleaned off the kitchen counters with Clorox, and did not rinse it off. My husband leaned back against the counter, and this resulted in a few totally white spots on his navy blue paints. They were one of his new pair of pants, so I ordered die for his pants, and used this to set the dye to keep it from fading out after many washings. The pants have been washed about 10 times since I dyed them, and set the color with this product. There is no sign of fading in the area dyed.

This is for the DYE FIXATIVE: it works amazingly well. Usually, things dyed in Rit fade very quickly in the wash. But with this stuff they fade much, much more slowly. Not perfect, still fades faster than a real-dyed thing that you bought already colored, but lasts more than 2x longer than a rit-dyed thing without using this stuff. Worth it.

I followed the 20 minute procedure on a cotton blend shirt and when I rinsed, I was amazed that very little dye was in the rinse water. Very happy! I have yet to wash the shirt in a washing machine but the rinse water says a lot already.

Results not Worth the Hassle

I would've returned the fixative and dye, but unfortunately my return window had closed by the time I used it. I bought the dye to dye several pairs of my favorite faded jeans that Old navy no longer sales. I followed the instructions washed the jeans, added the fixative and dye to 3 gallons of hot water and left the jeans in the dye/fixative solution for an hour. I had read another review that said to add black dye to the denim dye for a darker jean so that's what I did, but it didn't matter my jeans were still faded after completing the whole process. I tried three separate times, I even left the jeans in the dye solution for a longer period of time each time and they still came out faded. When first taking the jeans out from the dye solution they were really dark and the fixative was supposed to keep them that way but the instructions say to rinse and wash the jeans again so that's what I did. Unfortunately the fixative didn't keep the jeans the dark denim color that I was trying to achieve. The dye is super cheap, but it took three days to go through testing the process on each jean so I wasted three days of my life. Maybe the other color dyes work well, but the denim dye comes out this weird overly blue color even with the black dye added so my 2019 dark denim blue jeans came out a weird faded 1970s blue color. The results weren't worth the hassle.

Tried dying red jogging pants to black. After dying once following instructions perfectly the pants came out purple. Keep in mind red is probably one of the tougher colours to cover so we bought a second bottle and it still didn’t dye the pants black. Bought Dark blue to cover royal blue dresses. Used pre treatment and twice the amount of dye. This time around the dresses didn’t take to the dye at all. From my experience I would not use this product again. Spent $80 in total and wasn’t satisfied with any of the clothing I used it on. The dresses look exactly the same as before I dyed them

I'd recommend Procion dye over this one...use of Rit due and fixative does not prevent colorfastness, so it's inevitable that the color will fade away over time.
