A special thanks to fellow YA author, Jennifer DiGiovanni, for suggesting this book to me. She knows I love my teen sports romances and the angstier the drama the better. Rival Love by Natalie Decker is packed with both. Skylar Fletcher is entering her senior year of high school with a plan. A plan that is completely derailed when her mom moves them in with her boyfriend across town, forcing Skyler to attend her school's arch nemesis. We're talking a school rivalry that would put Michigan State and OSU to shame. These students hate each other. So much so that when Skylar, who through no fault of her own, becomes a Bobcat, her boyfriend of two years dumps her and her best friend since childhood stops speaking to her.

Skylar struggles with accepting her new life, but she's' not going to try and fit in with the enemy, leaving her with no friends. Except her mom's boyfriend's teenage nephew, who moved in with his uncle after his parents' tragic death. The pair are more frenemies than friends because Caleb isn't about to be caught fraternizing with the enemy. Even if she is really pretty and smells like a goddess.

Plot
This is primarily a romance as Caleb and Skylar realize their mutual loathing is giving way to something more, each convinced the other still holds strong feelings of animosity. Watching their feelings thaw, turn into friendship, and something more is a treat. Strong subplots include Skylar's relationship with her father, stepmother and half sister, her plans for the future now that she's not participating in school sports, her survival at school full of kids who hate her, and her relationships with her ex-boyfriend and former best friend. All are woven into the main plot seamlessly.

Characters
Skylar is a bundle of attitude and I love her.

This book was full of fun from the start! I loved both characters, Skyler and Caleb. They are so funny with their relationship being so eventful. First they seem like enemies especially has Skyler has transferred from a rival school and is now living in Caleb's house because Skyler's mother is in a relationship with Caleb's uncle who he lives with. They hate each other so much but something changes between them and they seem confused to how it happens but they start getting to know each other and soon they find that they are actually falling for each other. This is obviously going to cause trouble as everyone hates Skyler because they see her as the enemy. It's a really great story and i really enjoyed it.

I was a little weary of this book because the cover somewhat screams: Self-published. Yet, I notice, the author was published with Swoon (Right?) (so I'm a little disappointed in the typos now). Anyway, I downloaded this book thinking I'd never read it, not because of any reviews but because, at the same time, I actually recognized the picture on the cover from something else (Stock photo, an adorable one) and I was intrigued, but not enough to read it. Does that make sense?
Well, I read the book with bitter scrutiny (as I always do) and from the very beginning I was intrigued. It's a very nice little story. It reminded me of a cross between Simone Elkeles Wild Cards and Katie McGarry's Dare You To. (I'm not plugging any books, just my opinion). There was a hefty dose of drama and the ending seemed to come out of nowhere, but I was into it enough to go looking for the sequel. This book is definitely worth picking up (there really aren't that many typos) and I'll be looking for other books by this author.

I don't feel like a lot of the reviews really give this book a fair shot. They say that it didn't end like they wanted it to, but the story was good. I feel like you need to rate the overall book not just the ending so I will give it four out of five stars and say that Caleb and Sky definitely weren't the typical book couple. THey spent more time as enemies in the book than they did as a couple. The story starts with Sky transferring to her rival school because her mom has fallen in love with someone and they are moving in with him. Though Sky isn't happy about the situation she doesn't have a choice. Caleb is the star quarterback and wants nothing to do with Sky since he can't trust someone who is a Bulldog (the other school's mascot). You pick up on their connection long before they do. I can't wait to read Rival Hearts and see where the story goes.

This book drew me into their world, I felt their pain, I felt their passion, but most of all I felt like I couldn't sleep till I knew how it ended. Ever had an non obtainable crush. Someone way of your league. Well here's a perfect example of how nothing is out of reach. Rival or not love conquers all.

Review for Ramblings From This Chick. ramblingsfromthischick.blogspot.com

At this point, I don't read that many young adult books anymore. Not that I am against them, but there just usually aren't that many that really grab my attention. When I read the blurb for Rival Love by Natalie Decker though, I really wanted to get that story. I love a good enemies to lovers story, and I am a sucker for books with sports in them. Rival Love is the debut novel from Natalie Decker, so I was a little apprehensive about it but was hoping for the best. While I did enjoy a lot of this story, I also had some things that I didn't enjoy. I think that this was a good debut despite everything I had issues with though and I would look for more from Natalie Decker in the future.

Skylar Fletcher is a proud Bulldog! She lives for her sports, friends and boyfriend. She has her future all mapped out and has positioned herself to be as successful as possible. But when her mom decides to move in with her boyfriend Brian, Skylar knows her life is about to change. As if moving in with Brian wasn't bad enough, he lives in Bobcat territory and is also a teacher there. Skylar knows that she will never fit in with the Bobcats, but things quickly go from bad to worse when she finds out that Brian's nephew that lives with them is non other than Caleb Morgan the popular quarterback for the Bobcats. Caleb and Skylar want nothing to do with one another and agree to keep their living situation a secret from everyone at school. As they start to get to know one another though, they begin to see that they aren't as different as they thought they were. As their attraction and feelings continue to grow, they both begin to wonder if there is any way a bulldog and a bobcat could be together?
