I bought Rivals for Catan looking for a fun game to play with my wife when we couldn't get a group together. We absolutely loved it, and it didn't take long to decide to get this expansion also. There are new card types that add to the complexity (and fun) and 3 new themes to put a slightly different spin on the game. The Era of Intrigue is unique, setting up competing religions with different strengths - acquiring gold or secret knowledge. The Era of Merchant Princes is similar to the Era of Gold from the original game in that the emphasis is on trade. The innovation here is the Merchant Residences which give you different advantages, and the Metropolis, which doubles the point value of one city. This is my favorite theme to play; the opportunity for trading and dealing to eek out that last point reminds me of the last few rounds of the Cities and Knights expansion to Settlers when anybody can win. Tons of fun. The Era of Barbarians is similar to the Era of Turmoil from the original game, but takes it to a new level of complexity. If you enjoy Rivals for Catan, you will not regret picking up this expansion. I agree with the other reviewer that there is no good way to store the cards in the provided box, especially if you sleeve your cards.
My husband and I love playing games and the original Catan is one of our favorites, but of course, we can't play alone with just the two of us. Coming across Rivals for Catan was so exciting and has brought us hours of fun! So obviously, we were excited to find out that there are several expansion packs. This expansion, "Age of Darkness", has not failed to extract lots more enjoyment out of the original game. Some of the cards are a bit quirky, but that just adds to the overall fun and unpredictability of the game.
If you love Catan but can't always get enough people together to play it, then Rivals for Catan is your answer. The Age of Darkness Expansion adds more variety to the base game. When you really want to play Catan and only have two people you'll be glad you had this game.
I really like The Rivals For Catan card game. It brings in so many more details to the original Catan game and is easier and faster to play than the original Settlers of Catan. The Age of Darkness Expansion offers more variety to the original Rivals For Catan.
