Zillia's life is a complete disaster. Her mother dies in childbirth, and she's left with her terrible stepfather until he leaves and take everything not nailed down with him. Things go from bad to worse and Zillia just has to fight to survive. Without the help of her friends, she isn't sure that she could. Wylder is one of those friends, and as the years go by, Zillia starts to see him in a somewhat different light.
This was a pretty good book, even though the first third of it is pretty depressing. Things just keep getting worse for Zillia, but the rest of the book was when things started getting better. This is basically Zillia's story, so don't expect a full romance. The element is there, it just isn't as present as it usually is in a traditional romance story. Personally, I wish there had been a few more interactions between Zillia and Wylder, but it's a well-balanced book that I enjoyed.
The second book is about Soonie, a character that shows up a lot in this story. The main character for the third book wasn't in this one. The third book looks like it comes full circle and talks about Zillia and Soonie coming back together after a separation. This was a real treat.
Though I'm not a huge reader of religious novels, I found the way this author wove in elements of faith and God expertly done. Through the challenges Zillia faces and listening to the perspectives of other characters, Zillia gains further understanding of God's love. I think you'll enjoy this book if: you prefer strong characters, beautiful stories of friendship and perseverance, and early American history (you will feel like you're in 1800's Bastrop, Texas from page 1). It's a fantastic story altogether.
One last thing I want to mention is the quality of the writing. The descriptions and style are absolutely beautiful. The work was clearly well researched, and that shows all the way through. Overall, a wonderful read that you'll likely enjoy reading more than once.
There were some digital issues with the dates and titles. I'm not if it happened during the uploading. I also found some words and grammar issues.
River Girl's Song is sad, moving, and powerful. 16 year old Zillia suffers so much loss, and yet tackles the challenge of raising her baby brother on her own while running a farm. Having kids of my own, I know how hard it is to take care of a newborn, and then a baby, and a toddler, etc. I can't imagine doing it on my own, at that time, at that age.
Zillia was definitely in over her head, but I loved that she didn't give up and that she continued to do the best she could. I liked her final decision at the end of the book. I think most writers would've gone the other way because that's what people want to see, but I thought Zillia's choice was realistic. She needed to make the right choice for her and Orion.
Castillo's style is easy to read and smooth. Immersive, and vibrant. I would've liked to see more at the end, to see Zillia settle in a bit and show some of the happy times I'm sure were to come.
