Sam- it is easy to say someone is 'honest' but it is difficult to 'write' him or her as honest and keep true to a storyline the whole 300+ pages. My heart was breaking for him as he struggled with trying to overcome a past that could not be re-written. To continue to be true to himself now but to also be unapologetic and perhaps empathetic to Faith's struggles in dealing with his past. Amazingly enough, the whole book takes place in only about a 3-week period, for the most part. Talk about strong writing!
Faith- her struggle with trusting herself, Sam and her own feelings vs. being burned before is something that most women have been through at some point in their lives. I just really loved how Melissa wrote her character standing up for Sam; as she dealt with her best friend; with her WAC website; and also that she was a PA (physician’s assistant). Smart, successful, vulnerable, yet not.
The BIGGEST thing for me was the plot twist... I wanted to stand up and CHEER when 'it' was completely and totally unexpected! (I don’t want to spoil it!) However, it was not at all what I expected! I am usually pretty good at figuring things out ahead of time and while this had some predictability, it didn’t continue to follow what I thought would happen. I like when a book still ultimately surprises me!
The whole book had just the right balance of HOT sex and.... well, you know...HOT SEX! Melissa included enough steam to tell the story but not so much (or not enough) to belabor the points or miss out. This is kind of like a Goldilocks book...it's “just right!”
I highly recommend River of Love if you have ever read or have never read any of Melissa Foster’s other books. Either way, you’ll have a hard time putting it down and I guarantee you will want to meet the others in the family!
This book is a journey for two people with completely different reputations and growing attractions to each other. Sam is the "bad boy" with a string of one night stands. Faith is a serious "good girl" that everyone adores. Sam's brother even threatens Sam to stay away from her. They both decide to take a chance on each other & keep open minds while ignoring reputations and see what happens. Sam really has to work for this chance which is something he isn't used to. He's used to girls clamoring to go out with him. Faith is afraid of being hurt again but decides she can't keep living that way. However, she keeps thinking this is friends only & tries not to let it get serious.
I loved reading this story and seeing them grow into a complete couple by taking a leap of faith. Of course, I adore anything Melissa writes. It was nice to catch up on some of the family members from other stories. This could be read as a stand alone. The rest of the series just adds more back story. You don't want to miss this new addition to the Bradens!
