About the author

I have been the nursing author of Introductory Clinical Pharmacology for more than a decade. Here is a bit more information about me.
I started my nursing education at Shoreline Community College in Seattle, Washington earning an Associate of Arts in Nursing. I went on to complete both a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s of Nursing at the University of Washington. Additionally I hold a Bachelor degree in Psychology from the University of Washington.
I have been a practicing nurse for over 40 years. Practice areas include:
Acute care nursing (medical nursing/oncology/operating room/staff management & education),
Ambulatory care (Radiation oncology),
Community Health Nursing (homecare and hospice), and
Educator at both the ADN and LPN levels
My teaching career stretches over 20 years in both nursing and allied health courses. During my tenure at Tacoma Community College (Tacoma, Washington), my didactic load included Mental Health and Chronic Adult and Pediatric Medical-Surgical nursing, LPN-RN articulation, End of Life nursing, and Gerontology.
I developed the first End-of-Life nursing course in Pierce County after coincidentally meeting Sally Roach (past author of this textbook) at the first ELNEC conference held in 2001. I have designed on-line pharmacology & gerontology courses using Quality Matters standards as well as curricula for both virtual reality and simulation.
My clinical instruction load included both acute care and long term care facilities; relinquishing this portion of teaching to become the Nursing Program Director and going on to become the college’s first Associate Dean for Nursing Education. My work has been honored by Washington State Governor’s Workforce Best Practice Awards and Faculty Excellence Awards at Tacoma Community College.
I am also a contributing author of both Fundamental Nursing Skills and Concepts (2017) and Introductory Medical-Surgical Nursing (2018) by Barbara Timby as well as Lippincott’s Online Course for Focus on Nursing Pharmacology (2009) by Anne Karch.
My professional memberships include: Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society, National League for Nursing, Oncology Nursing Society and Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning, Textbook and Academic Authors Association, and the American Cancer Society.
My nursing certifications include:
Certified Nurse Educator (CNE),
Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN),
Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse (AOCN) and
Clinical Specialist in Medical-Surgical Nursing (CS).
I have been an item writer for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCLEX) as well as numerous specialty certification groups.
Since retirement from education, I had participated as a volunteer scripted/standardized patient in the Nursing Simulation Center at Swedish RN Residency Program and facilitate the “Living Well with Chronic Conditions” Stanford University course presented by Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington.
During the pandemic I have continued my volunteer work by helping out at mass vax clinics in the Seattle area.
During my nursing career I have presented at many conferences and written journal articles.
