Author Cook traces the evolution of aircraft from Wright days to the jet, including the serendipity of men, machine, and Air Force. Technical but readable for the non-engineer; fascinating history.

Mr. Cook provides a seldom-shared view of how aviation technologies advanced through the decades since he was personally involved in many of the decisions from 1938 until 1974. He also provides insights into some of the business decisions, both good and bad, by those in the aviation industry and why they made them. Since I piloted and flew in several of the aircraft he described while I was in the Air Force (T-33, KC-135, B-47, B-52, C-118, and C-47), it was interesting to read how the aviation industry arrived at some of its engineering solutions. Those interested in the history of aviation should find this book a wonderful addition to their library.

I got this from my Grandpa and have read it through 4 times in the past 3 years. Each time I get more out of it. If you want a look at how a big aerospace company developed and works, and also all the phases of development of an aircraft, this is the book.
