The ancient ways are quite different to what we know now and so the novel turns to a hilarious endeavor. Reading on about Ashley’s journey, her interactions and accepting things as they were, was fascinating to read. The author manages to take you back in time with her outstanding literature skill and teach you a thing or two about love and how women should be treated like.
The character building was superbly done and as it is a historical novel, I was looking for many references to historical facts. The author did not disappoint me as the author had added enough content to satisfy the point.
I believe the success of this novel is purely based on the strong character developments within the book. Alexander and Ashley are from two completely different worlds. The distinction is quite apparent and the author manages to clearly grasp the idea of making the reader aware of it.
I recommend this book to historical fiction fans and readers that appreciate the hint of love in stories.

While I am less a fan of time-travel and fantasy, the placement of a thoroughly modern woman from our future, as much as she could come from our present, allows an interesting aspect in the growing relationship between Alexander and the heroine, Ashley, that might not be achievable with a contemporary of Alexander's. Her choices, his intervention, her sole knowledge of her reality, and their deepening connection requires Ashley first to accept Alexander and his life exactly as they are, the ultimate requisite for all great love, and then requires truth from her and the seal of his own acceptance. How much this tells us about the historical Alexander is perhaps besides the point. What it can tell us about Eros and love between men and women approaching the Socratic ideal of love between men, lifting it from the realm of the reproductive toward the sublime love of equality is perhaps the central message of this book.
Ashley and Alexander touch in one another what each needs to move from Plato's notion of the object of love, her coldness and lack of honesty causing her to be taken for a goddess, unable to love and to desire because all of a god's desires are met, to a human woman, the subject of Alexander's love, able to risk trust. She becomes greater herself, and Alexander, in turn, can find a healing love for the injuries his mother inflicted on him as a child. The book suggests not only that Alexander is responsible for bringing the greatness of Hellenistic culture and democracy to modern times, but that his life is a step from Socratic notions of ideal love to the place of women in modern society.
A caution for anyone considering offering the books to get young adults interested in antiquity and the spread of Hellenism, definitely an adult treatment of Eros, which might not be at all displeasing for the grown-ups out there.
