Cornel Wilde, Richard Widmark, Celeste Holm And Ida Lupino. The Roadhouse is a cabin/hotel/bowling alley/night clubby place situated up near the Canadian border on the American side. Widmark owns it, Wilde Manages it, Holm works there and Lupino comes on as the entertainment. Piano and singer and totally unimpressive. Just as unimpressive as she leaves her cigs burning everywhere and burns all the furniture. Well she is a hit and she romances Cornel even though, Widmark wants her and Celeste wants Cornel....such confusion. I loved the story even though it had its predictable moments and loved all the cast even the support except for Ida Lupino, I never cared for her as an actress. This is a definite must see for all film noir fans or even fans of just good old movies. I won't tell you what begins to happen but best buds, Cornel and Richard fall apart.

Really can't add much to the already several reviews of this movie, but did enjoy it...good "film noir" flick with great cast...one to add to anyone's collection of those types of movies. I am not sure why I didn't purchase this movie earlier, but glad that I did, and recommend it to others.

I'm a fan of Cornel Wildes and Ida Lupino's, and I thought this was a good movie.
Also Richard Widmark did a very good bad guy, as usual.

I love film noir, which is why I bought this movie. It is all right, but seems to be missing some plot development. Roadhouse owner Jefty (Richard Widmark) entices a throaty-voiced cabaret singer Lily Stevens (Ida Lupino) from Chicago, to work at his rural establishment, a combination piano bar, bowling alley, and lodge. Generally known for loving-and-leaving his female companions in short order, he really falls for Lily. But she prefers his good-guy assistant Pete Morgan (Cornel Wilde), who in turn is idolized by another roadhouse employee, Susie Smith (Celeste Holm). Pete and Lily inevitably get together while Jefty's out of town on a hunting trip; when he returns, and finds out, his jealousy flares, especially since he's somehow arrived at the conclusion he & Lily are meant to marry. Jefty then sets-up Pete so that it looks like he's robbed the roadhouse of its weekly receipts, but asks for a suspended sentence, so he can keep Pete nearby and eventually wreak murderous revenge on him for 'stealing' Lily. Little is explained as to why Jefty (and Pete) are so crazy about Lily, we're just expected to accept they are. Personally, I thought Celeste Holm quite attractive, and wondered why neither of the men were interested in her. Maybe because she was so familiar, as to have become invisible? Who knows.

**** 1948. Directed by Jean Negulesco. When Lily Stevens is hired by Jefty to sing in his bar/bowling, everybody knows that Lily will soon be his mistress. But she's rather attracted by Jefty's friend and employee Pete Morgan. Jefty will imagine an ingenious scheme to get his revenge. ROAD HOUSE is a film I've always enjoyed very much for years. I particularly like the first part of the movie until Pete Morgan's trial. Ida Lupino clearly overshadows Cornel Wilde, Celeste Holm and Richard Widmark then with her hoarse voice and her sexy wardrobe. I also like a lot the bowling lesson given to her by Cornel Wilde. The last part of ROAD HOUSE is more outdated and the final game hunting reminded me at times of The Most Dangerous Game - Criterion Collection. But, all in all, I highly recommend ROAD HOUSE, a film that will defintively stay in ma library.

Very fast delivery--thank you, Amazon. Beautiful film quality and sound. Four first-rate actors turn out virtuoso performances in this drama. Richard Widmark was nearly brand new but already perfect as the wicked, giggling tormentor. Cornel Wilde shows he's not just a beautiful face--he can actually act! Celeste Holm should have made more movies than she did--she preferred the stage. And Ida Lupino's performance is among her best. On the negative side there are a lot of improbabilities. A ridiculous bar fight scene in which Wilde and another fool beat each other up, completely destroying everything that can be broken or shattered, while nobody tries to break up the fight--in fact customers and bar owners alike stand around and cheer. When the fight ends they shake Cornel's hand and smile, carefully stepping through 3 inches of broken glass on the floor. A touch of reality wouldn't have done this movie a bit of harm. But the acting from the four stars makes this worth watching.

I watched this a few times, but never managed to finish it. The trouble is that I just can't get past that part in the middle where Ms. Lupino sings a few numbers in a smoky cocktail lounge...OH YEA!! It ALWAYS entrances me - that's why I haven't gotten to the rest yet! I'll finish it one day...but that part in the middle where she sings is worth the entire cost of the dvd alone!!

With Ida Lupino in the key role and a youthful Richard Widmark as the less that mentally stable villain it is off to a good start that even a somewhat unconvincing romantic lead. The ending seems somewhat contrived, and would be probably more gripping on the big screen. There are some good loines in the script.
But as a long time fan of Ida Lupino I was bound to enjoy her singing and the drama!
