I've purchased all of Ryan Francesconi's music since hearing him at Carnegie Hall when he opened for and played with Joanna Newsom a few years ago. I've eagerly waited for each new album; this one, like the ones that came before, is evocative and elegiac all at the same time - but of what? hard to say - but that is the great thing about great music - it's telling you something, something you know, but just what is that thing? The more one listens, the more one senses deep and thoughtful ideas about movement, about living, about time passing. The music is rhythmic, melodic, complex, and simple all at the same time. It's music for late night planning out the rest of your life, or at least a few months into the future; for thinking about what has been and what can come to be. There's not a lot of music like this; Ryan is a true composer, an artist, a virtuoso; but never at the expense of the ideas behind the work. To say, in the vein of all the "music algorithms", 'if you like X music, you'll like THIS music', sells both YOU and the work short.

I've not written many or even any other reviews; but I'm compelled to put this one in - if you've come to this off in the corner Amazon page, just spend the $7 to hear the work for yourself; it's less than a few beers at the bar / a glass of wine / a coffee for you and yr pal. A far better thing to share.

If after you purchase this work, you regret it, let me know in the comments, and why, and I will send you some artwork or other sorta interesting thing as a thank you for just giving it a try.

I discovered Francesconi and Peart while listening to Simon Raymonde's Amazing Radio UK show - I hope this will not be their only Bella Union offering! It is exceptionally hard to believe that only two people produce this much depth and texture on two instruments. It feels like the soundtrack for an exotic travelogue or for a nature-focused bicycle excursion through either the Willamette Valley or the Columbia Gorge, as is fitting their Portland roots. This album is truly a journey full of a life and vibrancy that I haven't heard outside of perhaps Robin Guthrie - except here the subtleties come in a purely acoustic setting. I appreciate this album on so many levels - it has to be experienced, and the price here is a steal!

Music in lyrical movements -- relaxing and lush. Vinyl is likely where it's at, but the CD is a great gift for the 'normals' in your life... and there is as much in this album for them as there is for your skinny-jean hipster friends.

In fact, they will likely keep listening to it even after it becomes popular.

A perfect pairing of guitar and violin! This album is quintessential to a relaxing afternoon. I had listened to Francesconi's Parables and immediately purchased this album next and would highly recommend it.
