Volume 3 in his Road Show concert series, this album is Sonny Rollins pure and direct. Like his fellow octogenarian and jazz great Ahmad Jamal, Rollins still has much to say, still can reach toward new horizons. Although he has recorded occasional studio albums, it is before an audience in concert relationship that he feels most comfortable, free, and expressive. That live interaction spurs improvisation, and his legendary gift for musical associations in stream of consciousness is evidenced by an 8-minute solo track here. (How many tune references can you count?) As many musicians, he records his concerts for a personal archive and from that treasure box he pulled tracks made between 2001 and 2012 in Saitama, Japan; Tolulouse, Marseille, and Marciac, France; and St. Louis here in the USA. Rollins was always regarded highly by his fellow jazz musicians and jazz fans; now in his senior years has he received public and professional honors, including the Presidential Medal of Arts (The Kennedy Honors), Lifetime Achievement Award of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and other medals from Australia and Sweden. His fellow musicians at these particular concerts were Clifton Anderson, trombone; bassist Bob Cranshaw; pianist Stephen Scott; Bobby Broom and Peter Bernstein playing guitar; drummers and percussionists Kobie Watkins, Perry Wilson, Steve Jordan, Kimati Dinizulu, Sammy Figueroa, and Victor Lewis. The selected music includes a première, Patanjali, named after the ancient master who wrote the Yoga Sutras; Rollins had spent years studying Zen in Japan and yoga in India. The track Biji refers to Rollin's onetime nickname Brung Biji in an era when African and Arabic names were much in vogue for spiritual and political affiliation.Read more ›

This compilation of Sonny Rollins' live performances culled from the past dozen years is some of his finest on record: fiery, witty, unflaggingly engaged. Featuring several different Rollins ensembles, "Road Shows, Volume Three" is not only the best of the series, but goes a long way towards explaining why Sonny still plays to such widespread acclaim. IMO, this is essential listening for any jazz fan, whether veteran or relative novice. "Road Shows Volume Three" is vintage Sonny Rollins featuring the artist at the top of his game. It repays repeated listening with fresh discoveries of this saxophone master's creativity. I couldn't ask for anything more.

This sonorous, sublime and soaring third album in the Road Show series of saxophonist Sonny Rollins, accompanied by seasoned and sympathetic musicians, is a real treat and illustrates the old adage: "The older the violin (in this case the older the tenor saxophone) the sweeter the music." Sonny's creativity and mastery is unmatched, unchained and unbelievable. Buy this recording and wear out your player of choice playing it. Keep on playing that horn Sonny!

This CD is an absolute gem! I have loved Sonny Rollins playing ever cents, as a teenager, I discovered him with Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Percy Heath, And Kenny Clarke! For me Sonny Rollins is such a master and, I am thrilled when ever I hear the younger player who allows Sonny's influence!if If I was a saxophonist instead of a pianist I would be forever influenced by Sonny Rollins!I especially love hearing him play alone. And immensely difficult task handled magnificently!last but not least let's not forget his choice of songs! The musicianship on the CD is very special, indeed!

All Rollins performances are wonderful, but some are more wonderful than others. As someone who has been following Rollins' performance both through recording and through live concerts, I have to say that this contains some of the more wonderful performances, giving Rollins time to stretch out and build his solo (theme and its related variations at some length). Once, in Boston, I heard Rollins play a single performance (with his quintet) for 56 minutes. I don't think there will ever be anything to compare with that, but two of the tracks on this CD come close.

Like the good wine, Sonny Rollins play more interesting and sweet than ever. This vol.3 of Road Shows is better than the others. Include concerts from 2001 to 2012. Is the collection of Rollins S.XXI. He play really good and the pieces are a bunch of excellent themes. From Biji to Don't stop the Carnival are a celebration of a splendid saxophone giant. For fans of Sonny is essential, for jazz lovers a miracle than the "young" Sonny play in that way. Great album, don't missed. And don't forget, Rollins live is better than in studio

I have been listening to jazz for 40 years and "Solo Sonny" is among the most amazing pieces of solo saxophone playing I have ever heard. There are over a dozen tunes you will hear quoted, all of which are seamlessly weaved into his playing. In A Sentimenal Mood, The Song is You, She'll be Coming Round the Mountain, are but a few.
