World War III has just ended and the world's remaining inhabitants are on a desperate, devastating, struggle to survive. Gasoline is in short supply and those remaining, turn on one another for the crude oil.
A strong candidate for the designation of most thrilling action movie ever made (the turbo-charged exhilaration of its full-throttle highway chases has never been equaled), the second part of George Miller's post-apocalyptic trilogy is also a magnificently imagined movie myth. Like the Star Wars trilogy (by that other George) the Mad Max films draw their inspiration from the works of mythologist Joseph Campbell. In the 1979 original, Max (Mel Gibson) is a policeman, the last guardian of civilization and order in a devastated world reduced to chaos. But when a leather-clad gang of sadomasochistic speed demons mows down Max's family, his remaining connections to humanity are also permanently severed. After brutally exacting his revenge, Max wanders off into the wasteland alone, "a burned out shell of a man" who (to paraphrase The Searchers) is destined to wander forever between the winds. In The Road Warrior, Max rediscovers a sliver of his shattered humanity, and a spark of redemption, when he helps an embattled colony of pioneers fight off the savages who are after that most precious of all commodities: "guzzline." Max is transformed into a legendary hero, just as Mel Gibson was catapulted to international movie stardom. With its final stirring images, The Road Warrior transcends its genre (whatever that may be--science fiction? Western? action adventure?) and becomes something timeless. It's a great movie. --Jim Emerson

When people say Mad Max, they often think this movie. Many haven't even seen "Mad Max" (1979), the first movie which to me, is about as good as this movie. It's raw, but it's good. The Road Warrior, can however, be thought of as the best of the three movies. People then pick either the first one or Beyond Thunder Dome as the worst of the three.
The movie begins and we're sort of left with this kind of weak intro about what happened between Mad Max and The Road Warrior. I really wish they would have built that out a bit more. When we see the state of the world of The Road Warrior, you're left wondering what state the world was in the original Mad Max. In Mad Max, it appeared like the world was still somewhat normal, but that that there was just a lot of crime, and a gang wandering around that was hard to stop. In our world, that's always been the case with motorcycle gangs. Just watch Sons of Anarchy or check the biker stories in the news or wikipedia. So the Mad Max world didn't really feel apocalyptic, especially after watching The Road Warrior. It just felt like hey they're in the middle of nowhere, and maybe there's not a lot of cops to police. The Mad Max car of the first and Road Warrior wasn't even that out of control as a car. Even a lot of current cars feel at the Interceptor or above level. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that car and I've tried to always have a car like that ever since. There's even a very expensive toy version out there to find. Soooo. Anyway.
=Now we've moved onto a truly apocalyptic world, nearly everything is perfection in this movie.
=I love the story. Hey there's a place with gas, and the bad guys want it. Great setup and goals you can really understand.
=A great addition was the dog. The dog is such a great teammate and friend that for 25+ years later, people are still adding dogs to their heroes in video games in emulation of this movie.
=The bad guys are just so well done. They have such character. Their outfits are great (except the guy with his ass hanging out). Humongous is so great they just copied him again in the latest movie.
=Max's outfit is super cool too. I also like how he's rigged his car.
=The cars, so amazing as well. They're a huge part of making this movie what it is.
=The lines. "JUST WALK AWAY" so funny, so memorable.
=The rape scene is pretty disturbing. It's supposed to be disturbing and gets the job done. But it's definitely a low point. It certainly fits with the tragedy of the first movie.
This movie is definitely one of my top to favorite movies. (I say that a lot).
