Unfortunately I can't comment on the calibration of the gadget itself, (for now that is), as I didn't try it out before sending it back. But I gave the mounting issue (raised in some of the reviews) another thought. If there is no leveled mounting space like on my F-150, there are simple solutions, I.E. by adding small plastic spacers. With some simple technical skills you'll will be able to figure out something similar for your vehicle. I was also thinking about something fancy like a raised stand made out of bend aluminum sheet metal, mounted with Velcro or fixed, but that of course needs some technical skills and tools most people don't have on hand.
Ergo: If you're a little bit the inventive type of person (and even if not), you really should give this gadget a try. You won't find all those features in any similar compass that is out there. Believe me, I tried. Also you won't find a similar or even the same compass for such a good price. The same unit goes for $ 40 and more at other stores and you don't get free shipping.
Since I had such good service with the one in my Ranger pickup, now I have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler for winter driving and summer off roading, I wanted to have the same product in my Jeep too. But this time it will be wired to the factory existing ignition switched circuit. So when I start the Jeep or turn the switch to accessories, the compass will come on.
Update: As with allot of other complaints, it does not hold the heading. It hangs up in whatever direction. Unlike other people whom sent to product back, I just hit the recal button on the back and it works for a while and then locks up again. It does not work nowhere near as good as the old one I have. But it gives me other info such as the temp outside and the battery voltage - which is darn close to being accurate.
Even though this device is constantly powered, the compass regularly resets and goes through it's 'blinky-blinky' phase that seems to last for days no matter how many times i 'calibrate' it.
Also, the battery voltage meter gets really whacked out once the temperature is below 40 degrees or so. It reads 26 volts when a VOM at the battery reads 14.1V
If the thermometer AND the compass worked, it might be worth it, but at $30 this thing is a rip-off. Save your money
Outside Temp: install the receiver out of the wind and far from the engine but somewhere in the front bumper works great. Also note the temp will not be accurate after you have been driving and you stop because of the engine temp. but once you start driving again it takes care of it.
Inside Temp: When you install the item on the dash when it is in the sun it is not accurate at all.
