Cannot hardly buy new traditional country music anymore. Don't like many of the newer acts. Too poppy for me. I have become a bluegrass fan. Love Alison Kraus and several of the other bluegrass groups including this one. This is real American music.

Excellent CD from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver

Doyle Lawson is one of my all time favorite bluegrass artists. I hae seen him in concert on numerous occasions. I own many Doyle Lawson cd's and thought this one would be just as good as all my other previous purchases, but I must say there are really only a couple of songs I really enjoy. Doyle Lawson himself doesn't even sing the lead in any of the songs. Not his typical style at all. More country than good old fashion bluegrass. If you like traditional bluegrass you won't like this, but if you favor more modern bluegrass country then this is right up your alley. I personally wished I would have just saved the money and maybe downloaded the 2 songs I did like.

Doyle Lawson, as we all know, has had a long career in bluegrass music. When he was inducted into the IBMA Hall Of Fame in 2012, he said, “I’ve got a lot of fuel left in my tank with a lot of plans in the works, and I’m as excited about the music as I’ve ever been.” And, he was right, as Lawson continues to record and release many, if not more, albums than musicians half his age.

The latest example is Road Well Traveled, released on Mountain Home Music. Produced by Lawson, this collection features his latest hard-rehearsed band featuring Joe Dean, Corey Hensley, Jason Barie, Mike Rogers, and Josh Swift. The album starts off with the rollicking “Dixie Road,” which showcases the patented Quicksilver harmony vocal treatment and puts Swift’s resonator guitar to full use. But this is not a barn-burner of an album as there are a lot of sad, heartfelt yet beautiful songs on here, including “How Do You Say Goodbye To Sixty Years?,” a tale about a man burying his wife after six decades of marriage. That’s followed by the tearjerker country song “One Small Miracle,” penned by Whisperin’ Bill Anderson and Steve Wariner.

The pace kicks back up with “It’s Hard To Be Forgotten,” written by the members of Quicksilver, as well as with a song about an old musician in “Dobro Joe.” Other highlights include a wonderful song written by Carl Jackson and Jonathan Burchett called “When Love Is All You Want” and also Harley Allen’s “The King.” The album finishes with the upbeat, old homeplace jam called “Fiddlin’ Will,” which Jim and Jesse McReynolds wrote about their true-life Uncle Will who simply played music for friends and family only

What I love about this album is the fullness of the music. The music doesn't come across as lacking anything.

Let me just start out by saying I had been eagerly anticipating this album ever since it had been announced. After having to deal with a release date screw-up (which Amazon did a great job in dealing with), I finally have the CD in my posession. I have already listened to the entire album and I've got to say this is one of the strongest efforts by DL&Q that I've heard in years. Each song on this album flows together extremely well and many of the songs are able to evoke emotions from the listener such as feelings of sadness and anger. For examples of this listen to "How Do You Say Goodbye to Sixty Years" and "Say Hello to Heaven." The only reason this album has been given four stars is because I went into this CD expecting to hear some songs played in the style of many classic recordings that Doyle made in the'80s and '90s. Unfortunately the only track that provided this was "It's Hard To Be Forgotten," but overall it was very worth the wait and I would definetely recommend it.

What can I say? I love DLQ no matter what they do and who is currently in the band. I couldn't give this five stars because of Doyle's use of non-traditional bluegrass instruments. I am a traditionalist - but I also understand an artist wanting to try new things. I own pretty much everything DLQ has recorded - I will play this one (frequently) but it won't be in heavy rotation like their more traditional sounding recordings are. Go see DLQ live - you won't regret it.
