Editorial Reviews

One moonlit night, little Sophie is snatched from her bed at Mrs. Clonkers’ orphanage by an awesome giant who whisks her away on a magical, thrilling and funny adventure. Roald Dahl’s (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach) enchanting, best-selling children’s book comes to life in this classic, animated musical feature by the award-winning Cosgrove Hall Studio, makers of DangerMouse and The Wind in the Willows. Unlike the Bloodbottler, the Fleshlumpeater and the Bonecruncher, the Big Friendly Giant is a good giant who blows sweet dreams into the bedroom windows of children as they slumber. When Sophie learns that the monstrous crew of meanies is off to England to gobble up innocent boys and girls, she sets out to stop them once and for all, with the help of her new, rather large, friend. The BFG shows the most tender and dreamlike side of celebrated author roald Dahl as he depicts the amazing friendship that grows between a little girl and a big-hearted Giant. My four year-old loves this well-done animated version of Roald Dahl's BFG book. She enjoys the animation (with a great, pleasingly spooky beginning, though not too scary) as well as the story itself.
The Big Friendly Giant visits children's windows each night and sends them pleasant dreams; his other job is to catch the bad dreams out there and bottle them up so they don't frighten children, as well as prevent the evil giants from eating children! A lonely girl, Sophie, is one day whisked away from here dreary orphange by the BFG to help him with his task. Thereafter the plot thickens and in the end the two must enlist the help of the Queen of England to make all well again.
This is a wonderful show. Made in the UK, the only difference I can see from the usual Disney fodder is that Big Friendly Giant is not nearly as loud, yet it captivated my child throughout, the songs sent her into peals of laughter. As far as I can tell this tape has not been dubbed or the voices altered in any way for the American market (a la Bob the Builder, Brambly Hedge, etc.)
I also recommend (based on my child's response): William's Wish Wellingtons, Noddy, Old Bear Stories, Rupert and the Runaway Dragon, Postman Pat, Brum and the Baby Carriage, The Secret of Roan Inish, The Borrowers, Thomas the Tank Engine, the Princess and the Goblin.

I teach second grade and have shown this movie after I have read the book (The BFG) aloud to them. The movie follows the book's storyline, and is a delight for the children especially since they can anticipate what will happen. My original tape has become damaged so I was very glad to have found a replacement at Amazon.com!

The BFG is imaginative, scary, happy, heartwarming, joyous, and has terrific actors: David Jason is so superb as the giant that no-one can ever do better, and Amanda Root is charming and touching as Sophie. My five-year old son and I have watched it several days' running, anticipating numerous glorious moments. It is a joy and a treat.

Very cute movie. I love all Roald Dahl's books and have tried to get the movies based on them as well. This one was well done, quite cute and is very reminiscent of the actual book. If you're a Dahl fan, I'd recommend giving this a watch! The cartoon style is a bit dated but you stop noticing after awhile.

Wow! Being a big fan of "Willie Wonka" and "James and the Giant Peach", I found this video to be true to the roots laid down by these earlier classics. The animation was superb, the characters were completely believable, and the story was very touching. The five year old I watched it with was enthralled by what he saw, and raved about it for hours afterward. One of the best adaptations of Roald Dahl we've ever seen!

After you read about the Big Friendly Giant, students love to watch the movie. Very close to the same storyline with a few minor differences that make great conversation and discussion points for upper elementary.

This movie is an animated film. It follows Roald Dahl's famous story of the BFG and his friendship and love for the little orphan Sophie. The creators of this animated film did a beautiful job of illustrating the development of trust, security, companionship, fun, caring, love and friendship between the giant and Sophie. You will enjoy watching how he learns to take care of this little human in his giant world.

There is danger from the other giants who enjoy eating humans. You will see how Sophie and the BFG's bravery help to capture the "bad" giants and put them away for good to protect the humans. In a scene you will note how Sophie and BFG love each other so much they are willing to lose their life to protect the other one.

There is a happy ending. It is a nice family movie, however the animators did a great job in creating the "bad" giants, so they may seem a little scary for the young child.

I enjoyed watching this movie and comparing it to the original story.
