THE ROARING TWENTIES * HITS OF '20 (When My Baby Smiles At Me) features eighteen top ten sellers from that year, so this is really a "BEST OF" 1920 collection. Two previously unreleased bonus tracks are also included. All 24 recordings in this set were made by the acoustic horn method, thus they have somewhat limited frequency range. Despite this potential handicap, the uniqueness and superiority of the performances on HITS OF '20 are most apparent.

Highlights include:
Al Jolson's original waxing of George Gershwin's "Swanee." Jolie also has two other songs on this album.
The Paul Whiteman orchestra's first big hit, "Dardanella," was a glimpse of great things to come. Whiteman, along with Mr. Gershwin, introduced "Rhapsody In Blue" to the world in 1924. The Whiteman band also does "The Japanese Sandman" here.
"The Love Nest" will sound familiar to any fan of George Burns & Gracie Allen-- this was their theme song on both radio and TV.
Iron-lunged tenor Billy Murray, the first superstar of the recording industry, is featured on three tracks. Murray's powerful voice was famous for rising above the most blaring of backups or loudest of sopranos, and his services were sought by numerous labels during his 40-plus year career.
Eddie Cantor, the comic sensation of the 1919 Ziegfeld Follies, reprises "You'd Be Surprised," the Irving Berlin tune he performed to great acclaim in that extravaganza.
Berlin has two other novelties here: "I'll See You In Cuba," and "Wait Till You Get Them Up In The Air, Boys."
One of the bonus tracks, "I Love The Land Of Old Black Joe," is by the first "radio girl," Vaughn DeLeath. DeLeath is credited with inventing the vocal style known as "crooning." An Edison label artist, her soothing voice was featured widely in early radio.

Comic singer Billy Murray is over-represented on this album. The real treasure is "Mean, Mean, Mamma" by the Original Indiana Five. It's a terrific Hot Jazz song - so good that I've bought vol 1 of the Indiana Five album from Amazon. It's great!!

It's interesting how compilations are arrived at. I enjoy a good theme for an album. While the obvious theme is songs from the 1920's, they seem to be eclectic without any underlying theme, as if they did a poll of the people who worked at the record company as to what songs they would like to put on a 1920's album.

The songs included in the CD are as follows. It's not a best of, or chart-toppers, necessarily, but there are some great songs on here that'll take you back to the roaring 20's.

1. Dardanella (Ben Selvin & His Novelty Orchestra)
2. Swanee (Al Jolson)
3. Whispering (Paul Whiteman)
4. St. Louis Blues (Marion Harris)
5. I'll See You In C-U-B-A(Billy Murray)
6. Love Nest, The (Joseph C. Smith & His Orchestra)
7. Marion, You'll Soon Be Marryin' Me (Billy Murray/Gladys Rice)
8. Japanese Sandman, The (Paul Whiteman)
9. Alice Blue Gown (Joseph C. Smith)
10. Wait Till You Get Them Up In The Air, Boys (Billy Murray)
11. Prohibition Blues (Nora Bayes)
12. You Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet (Al Jolson)
13. Hold Me (Art Hickman & His Orchestra)
14. When My Baby Smiles At Me (Ted Lewis & His Jazz Band)
15. Margie (Original Dixie Land Jazz Band)
16. Mean, Mean Mama (The Original Indiana Five)
17. Rock Me In My Swanee Cradle (Ernest Hare)
18. Left All Alone Again Blues (Marion Harris)
19. Oh, By Jingo! Oh, By Gee! You're The Only Girl for Me (Frank Crumit)
20. Original Dixieland One-Step(Lopex & Hamilton)
21. I Love The Land Of Old Black Joe (Vaughn DeLeath)
22. You'd Be Surprised (Eddie Cantor)
23. In Sweet September (Al Jolson)

I enjoyed this music because it took me on a time travel journey to a time I had never experienced, but could enjoy vicariously.Great background music for a party.
