Couldn't put it down. Full of insight, full of great anecdotes (and I am going to spoil a couple of juicy ones here, please be warned!):

Mr Kwok is a gifted, rags-to-riches business achiever, and a genuine insider to a fascinating weave of story lines: the birth of modern Malaysia, the amazing story of the 20th century Overseas Chinese, the rise of the People's Republic, the fall of British colonialism, and the incursion of the Japanese.

He went to university with Lee Kuan Yew ("In those days he was Harry, Harry Lee"). He grew up a tight family friend of the founder of UMNO, got a major early business break via Japanese colonisers – even while his lionised communist brother fought them in the Malay jungle. He did serious business with Suharto.

Because of their colonialism, he pretty much hates the British, and you can understand why: there’s an absolutely disgraceful account of HSBC refusing to extend him (thoroughly deserved) credit. This while (as he later finds out in appalling circumstances) the same bank freely throws bucket loads of wasted credit at undeserving losers who simply happen to be white.

In truth, I think it's a kind of love – hate relationship with English - he carves up commodities trading in London (he’s a genius), and is clearly in his element there.

Mr Kwok’s no angel. I was very disappointed, and shocked, at him turning out like his own father in dumping his first wife and starting a second family in full view of the first one. This he did after he detailed for the readers the horror of his father’s actions, and the pain it caused his own mother and her children.

Personally, I agree with the realistic way he handles corruption: he does what he has to do to be a player in the business game, while not going beyond the point where the corruption negatively impacts ordinary Asian livelihoods. There are purer souls than I who will not agree with this moral relativism, though.

Love or hate Robert Kwok, he lays it all out for real.

Marvelous Book

This book is several stories in one: First, the biography of the extraordinarily successful Robert Kuok, whose energy and business acumen propel him to the top ranks of regional business. Second, it is the story of an era, how Malaysia and to some extent Singapore emerged from colonialism, grappled with the Second World War, and made their way as independent states. The books excels in both stories, pulling the reader into the journey of Kuok as well as a journey of the region.
