We had originally been thinking about furring strips with narrow cavities and more substantive insulation, but with only 81" in the highest areas and considerably less under the ducts (especially with drywall cladding), we realized we would need every inch possible. This material was the perfect solution. While a little more insulation might have been nice, there is no way we could have found better insulation at 3/16th of an inch. And after discovering just how comfortable the vinyl floors are with this underneath, I will never lay another vinyl floor without it. It really makes for a very nice combination of softening the surface and making it quite a bit warmer - very efficiently reflecting the heat from your feet, right back through the heavy vinyl surface.
And of course the price is unbeatable. I started this project having to buy two rolls from Home Depot - at $25.95 per roll. I bought the last four rolls here on Amazon for $14.95 per roll. With Amazon prime my shipping was free and they were here in just a couple of days. It seems odd to buy building materials online and indeed for many materials it really isn't cost effective, but I have learned to check here first, because you never know.
The underlayment arrived on time and packaged well (however, they all came separately, and I would think that since I ordered 5 of them, in order to cut the shipping costs for Amazon, they would have been shipped all together). We opened one of the boxes and wanted to check out the product so we rolled it out. We have purchased underlayment before for another floor we put down, and I can tell you this is every bit as good as that, at nearly half the cost. The other great thing about this is that it is a 2 in 1, so it comes with a moisture barrier AND it has a stick strip so you can stick one piece to another and it won't slide underneath the floor. Nice feature and not all underlayments have this. Also, no horrible smell either from opening the packaging or taking off the sticky strip.
We are pleased with our choice and next time we lay down a floor we will be looking to Amazon first for underlayment, among many other hardware purchases. And the next time we are looking for underlayment, we will look for this stuff first.
The underlayment itself does what it says. Also, it cuts easily with scissors. There is one minor annoyance: the top side is rolled to the outside so you cannot just unroll the underlayment across the floor. Instead, you have to unroll it and then flip it over (or just unroll from the top side). Also, I don't think the size of the roll is quite 100 sq ft. as it certainly doesn't cover as much floor space as we'd planned. I think perhaps the plastic lip that is designed to over the adhesive strip on adjoining pieces is somehow included as part of the roll's area. It's not particularly thick and presumably it won't reduce noise as much as more expensive and thicker (i.e., 3-in-1) rolls.
I had ordered extra since I thought overlapping the rows of underlayment would cause me to need extra. But that wasn't the case - I still have an evtire roll leftover!

The underpayment does weaken sound over flooring. However, the sound it does emit is like really thick cellophane (like a plastic crinkling noise that sound nothing like wood, but... Read morePublished 6 days ago by Cherry
