My background is in cyber security and IT. I love functional gadgets that make life easier. I purchased this product - in large part - due to the success and pleasant experience I've had with the iRobot Roomba 880. Our thinking was that if this robot vacuum works so well then perhaps the technology for robot lawnmowers has developed to the point where it can be used consistently for residential purposes.
The price was high at $1,600, but after my research, this was the best robot mower for our needs and the most reputable among those available. I was willing to pay a premium for it as that's usually the case for newer technologies.
Out of the box the setup was straight forward. It took around 5hrs to nail down the guide wire around my 11,000 sq ft yard. Planning for the location of the base station is necessary as it cannot be less than 10ft from any corners, on level ground, and ideally in the shade and hidden from the street. If you purchase the mower I recommend getting additional waterproof twist wire connectors as they will come in handy when you have to splice the wire or in cases where the mower cuts it. **When the mower cut the wires it was because I did not bury them correctly - not a malfunction. Initially, I did not get it to go back through the narrow pass - places less than 3 meters where the mower must pass through - despite following the directions to the letter. I'm sure I could have figured this out, but after the first 5hrs I didn't want any parts of it for at least a week or two if the mower was working. This was not a big deal at all. When it didn't return to it's base on it's own I simply went outside my fence and retrieved it.
The power box was the first thing that gave me issues. When the mower was in it's base station, the power box would show that it was out mowing the yard. The seller said that the power box was defective and when I returned the mower for a separate issue they replaced the power box.
Less than 14 days after I received the mower whatever keeps the underside of the front of the mower balanced and off the ground no longer worked on the left side of it. The display stopped working altogether and it scraped the ground when moved. I was able to get a gentleman on the phone without much issue. We tried to troubleshoot via FaceTime to no avail. They sent a label and I returned it for repair.
**** Since it was less than two weeks, I requested a new mower as I didn't want to deal with a defective product whenever the warranty expired. Robomow representatives advised that their policy was to attempt to repair my machine and return it to me unless they were unable to diagnose the problem, or unsatisfied with the repair. Although I didn't think this to be fair (or smart from a marketing standpoint) I realized that the company was likely very small and cash-strapped. Not to mention, I really loved the product and wanted to give it a chance.
When I got my mower back it was immediately obvious that they used the same box that I'd sent it to them in. So after being used for - what was now - a third trip (1. initial purchase, 2. return to seller, 3. return to me) this box was in really bad shape.
I learned soon after that so too was the mower in bad shape. The repaired mower would only show a display intermittently. It would not allow the use of any electronic control functions. I contacted the seller who said that the main board had failed again. He asked that I send it back again so that they may investigate the cause of the malfunction, but would only replace the unit if they were unable to determine the cause.
I really wanted to mower to work, but was unwilling to accept paying that much money for a repaired/refurbished/defective product that went bad in less than a month. Had they replaced the unit, I would have kept it. As I write this review I'm considering repurchasing the Robomow so that I may get a new one that works as advertised.
I cautiously recommend this product because IT IS AWESOME when working. There COULD be a failure in the build quality, OR I may have received a bad unit - I don't know. There is, however, DEFINITELY a problem with the service/maintenance side of this company that (in my opinion) is suffering from a lack of funding.
Robomow seems to be on the right track with this product, but unless they're able to solve the service problem they may not be around long.
When I bought my home I was set on doing my lawn maintenance myself. I quickly found out why no one in Houston maintains their own lawn between the heat and humidity. I gave in and hired a lawn service at $30/wk for just mowing and edging. It was great but I hated throwing the money away. The price tag on this mower is high but at that rate it will pay for itself in a year.
The backyard is fenced and that's the majority of my yard, so twice each week it goes out automatically and mows the back yard. It has only not found its base on a few occasions. The lawn always looks freshly cut and flat. Better than the lawn service actually- much smoother and less time between cuts. I've been doing edging once every couple of weeks but will probably have to move to once a week when the grass growth rate picks up. Laying the wire out really isn't that bad. Use the Robo-ruler they provide and read the instructions. Space your stakes out a long way during initial setup for easier adjustments during testing. It took me about 4-6 hours to do the whole house. Think of it as mowing the lawn for your last few times. I had a few questions along the way during setup and Robomow support always emailed me back within one business day (and usually much sooner). Great recommendations and really helped me out. I've had one issue with water entering the keypad after a week long of heavy downpour in Houston. I emailed support and described the issue. They sent a part out immediately and gave me a video on how to install it. I replaced the keypad in about 5 minutes- no tools required. I was really impressed with how easy it was.
The side and front yards of my house are narrow and deep like many houses in the U.S. suburbs. The edging feature gets most of the side yard, but it misses some patches that it won't reach because when it makes it to the front, the boundary wires are so close the robot just keeps hitting one in the algorithm and turning back into the front yard. The patches are so small that I just manually mow them via the Bluetooth app while I'm manually moving the mower to and from the home base (since the backyard is fenced). It's really not a big deal.
The anti-theft audible alarm is not near loud enough, the Bluetooth range is terrible, and I feel like it should have GPS and WiFi. It would also be awesome if they had a little "Robo-door" with a NFC sensor to install into a fence that only opened for "Little-Eddie" (Eddie was my former lawn guy) and not my dogs. I don't feel any of those are worth taking a star off for, but hopefully RoboMow will address it in a future model. Also worth noting, my large mounds of dog poop in the backyard have not slowed this thing down one bit. The dogs have a dog door and don't bother it. They growled and hated it at first, but just like with the Roomba they got over it.
Yes, this thing isn't cheap... but I used to pay a lawn company to mow my lawn. Let's do some math. Assuming that my mowing season is from May 1 through October 31, that would be 26 weeks (your situation may differ). When I paid $35 per week for someone to mow, that would be $910 per year ($35x26). At that rate, I'll be SAVING money with the Robomow before the end of my second year of ownership. Could I also save money by cutting it myself? Yes but if I cut it myself, I wouldn't have a really cool/nerdy robotic toy in my yard! :-)
Are there any drawbacks to the Robomow? Well, I live on a lake and it bugs my wife a little that boats always slow down to check out my Robomow since they've never seen anything like it. lol.
