Does the story take place in a mental hospital, in a ward known as Cottage H, a ward run by a sadistic "houseparent" named Trump? Or, is Scotty actually telling the story to a psychiatrist, making up the details as he goes along, using things he's seen on TV or heard about in the downtown bars he frequents? He believes all of the characters in his story - including the psychiatrist - are actually robots that have made themselves look like humans. Are they?

Or maybe, the whole novel is some kind of allegorical representation of our current "crazy" political situation? In the end, it's up to you, the reader, to decide what the reality is.

About the Author

Dr. Murdock is a California State University professor.
