This Volume 2 collects the five issues of "Roche Limit: Clandestiny". It follows after Volume 1, but apart from a few references to characters from Volume 1 and being set on the same planet 75 years after the events in Volume 1, this Voume 2 is basically a standalone. The story arc for these five issues is complete, although the open ending makes it clear that there is more story to be told.

MILD GENERAL SPOILER. In a nutshell, we have an expedition to the abandoned planet, carrying a secret cargo. Once landed, the crew members have to deal with head games that disorient their sense of reality; said bad vibes appear to emanate from some dark, evil force. Off we go to adventure, investigate and explore, and some crew members do better than others.

After reading the first quarter of this book I had pretty much had enough. It was hard to tell the female characters apart, there was a bit too much crew disharmony, the drawings were all rather dark, there were lots of cryptic or angsty clues about crew member's backstories, and we didn't seem to be moving forward. There was also an emphasis on some android carrying on about humans being weak and selfish and unable to cooperate and so on. So, I decided to just skim through to the end to see if there was an interesting reveal. But, well before the end I found myself engaged in the story, interested in the characters, and impressed with the plotting. There was also some much needed monologuing that provided clarity about the earlier action. It was intriguing enough that I went back to the beginning and started over. This time I enjoyed reading the whole book and appreciated what the author had done.

Bottom line - there are at least five interesting characters; the pontificating eventually peters out; an actual plot emerges and picks up steam to a socko ending; second time through it's easier to recognize who is who; there are actually a few laughs and some well developed scenes. I'm glad I hung in there - this is one of the better "crew-lost-on-a-weird-forbidden-planet" stories.

(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Not as good as the first volume but still a good sci-fi read. Also, the tone and feel of the story and the art is a 180 from the first volume.

'Roche Limit Volume 2: Clandestiny' by Michael Moreci with art by Kyle Charles is a truly strange story. It falls into the genre of weird fiction and reminded me of the work of Jeff Vandermeer.

75 years after a ship has been sent out to colonize a planet, another ship is sent out after them. No one has heard a thing from the original mission, but when the current mission crash lands on the planet, they find that not all is as it appears. There are hostile alien life forms and a strange forest that would seem to give you your dreams, but perhaps that is the last thing you want on a planet like this. Solving the mystery of the previous mission takes second place to just surviving the planet and each other.

The story is as strange as it sounds. I enjoy this sort of story where basic perceptions and senses may not be relied on. This seems like a horrifying thing to happen. The art by Kyle Charles is good, but it seems a little muddy at times, and it's a bit hard to sometimes figure out what is happening. That may be intentional, but it didn't feel like it. Still I liked this bizarre story of survival and loss.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Image Comics, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

This took a hard turn from the moody Blade Runner/Expanse feel of Vol 1 into a more muscular, space marines getting picked off feel in the vein of Aliens or Starship Troopers. The quality doesn't take a dip, though, and it continues to be character driven in the way Moreci always delivers.

Don't think the second volume was as interesting as the first. The artwork and coloring was so dark and murky, you pretty much have to read this with the lamp on the page as some pages are so dark. For comic science fiction, this is pretty interesting reading, but if you are a deep reader of scifi novels and movies - there is quite a bit here in the plot and story that will seem similar. To me I could see echoes from Alien, Solaris and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch in the series. Even with the back matter at the end of each chapter/issue, I don't know that we really get as much fleshing out of the story as possible. So for a big scifi novel reader, this might seem kinda rote, but for someone that reads super hero comics, its probably a window into some different kind of stories. Still for US comics, doing this type of science fiction is a work of love and I think the writer and artist could maybe do even better in later works. I liked it enough to get the third volume and hope that there are more creators that go for making more science fiction comics.

Second volume in the series of paperbacks which collect issues of the comic 'Roche Limit.' A science fiction story, all about a human colony near a very strange spacial anomaly.

This volume collects the comic's second run. Five issues which were published under the title 'Roche Limit. Clandestiny.'

The is largely a self contained mini series, but it would still be better to have read volume one first in order to get the most from this.

Minor spoilers for volume one follow.

The story takes place over seventy years after the end of that book, when the colony went dark. Several expeditions to find out what happened were never seen or heard from again.

Now, another expedition is on the way. None of them will be prepared for what they find...

The book collects all five issues as chapters, with numbered title pages so you can see where the latest one begins. Some of the covers from the individual issues are reprinted right at the back. As with volume one, each of them ends with a text page giving background info to a certain aspect of the story. And each issue also starts with a scene that runs for a couple of pages, and then there's another title page. So they are rather like pre credit sequences on tv show.

The art in this will be a bit of an acquired taste. It's murky and dark, which does rather suit the story at points. But it can also vary in quality, and some of the images are really very sketchy indeed. Since the story jumps in right at the point where the expedition are just about to get there, you don't get too much character introduction or detail first. And the quality of the artwork at times does mean you might at points struggle to remember who is who and what they are doing.

It starts very well, throwing you into the middle of their arrival and leaving you with no idea, just like the expedition members, as to what will happen next. This then becomes something you do need to stick with, because answers aren't immediate. And given the aforementioned art issues, you might get a bit puzzled at points as to what is happening.

However, it's worth sticking with. There's a central theme to this, which is summed up in one important line that you eventually get. Which offers a lot of interesting food for thought for the reader. And, even with more art issues, it does get some good action and set up for more going. And gives one character a very good story arc. You will feel for them by the end.

This does end on a cliffhanger, which will lead into the third volume. And it is intriguing enough to make me look forward to that.

All in all a decent bit of science fiction, and one worth giving a chance to.

It does contain some violence, and a little bit of strong language.
