I was really excited about Jules and Vance’s story from the moment that Jules got into a car chase with a bad guy that ending in front of Fortnums and she shot out his tires. 'That is the Rock Chick for me' and I knew I was going to love her and I WAS NOT WRONG.
Jules is a bad ass. She lost most of her family young and now works with homeless kids trying to get them off the streets. She has decided to also do a little guerilla style warfare in her city to make herself a nuisance to the drug dealers in the area so they will get out of town or at least try selling to anyone but the kids she is trying to keep clean and get into homes. How can you not like and respect that.
Jules is on a mission but she didn’t go into it blind she at least got a little training to help keep her safe. But Vance has taken a big interest in her so I’m thinking that he is going to make sure that Lee’s boys also give her a little more training. It was great to have a Rock Chick that wasn’t the ‘Damsel in Distress’ and knew how to throw down a little.
***“I’m just relieved that when you told me you knew what you were doin’, you actually knew what you were doin’.”***
It seems that Vance wasn’t the only one that took a liking to a girl who can throw down and he might have just a little competition from one of his Alpha brothers if he doesn’t get to staking his claim soon.
Like all the Rock Chick books this has funny times:
***Is that Indy Savage?” Zip asked, staring at Indy.
“Yes—” I began.
“Oh no. No, no, no. I don’t want Lee Nightingale on my ass. You are not draggin’ her into this. She’ll recruit Chavez’s woman and Nightingale’s sister and it’ll be the Rock Chick Renegades against the Denver Drug Dealers. I see rivers of blood and pissed-off bad boys denied their pieces of ass and they’ll come after me. No way, I won’t be a part of it.”***
***“From what I hear, you’ve had a lot of sweet things.”
“No. I’ve had a lot of easy things.”
“I know a couple of girls you’ve—”
“None of them smelled of melons, tasted of cherries or ended up worth the effort,” he said bluntly.***
***“Knowin’ I got something to live for now that you’re mine. Keepin’ it that way, workin’ at keepin’ this good like it is right now.” I stopped breathing and he kept talking. “I can go back now, to the rez, to my family with you on the back of my bike.” My lungs started burning with lack of oxygen, but that was okay considering my heart had also stopped beating. I figured I was going to die at any moment and I was totally fine with that. Vance continued, “They can see that, despite them, I made it to the other side, past their s***. While they lived their dysfunction, I worked my way to something better, ridin’ up with you wrapped around me.”***
and just down right good times:
***“You wanna explain to me how you’re all of a sudden close with Indy and her gang?”
I shook my head, not because I didn’t want to explain it, but because I couldn’t. “I have no idea.”
When he looked dubious I continued, “Honestly. I swear. I actually tried to get them to leave me alone, but I thought Daisy was going to take me down in a bitch-slapping fight when I told her my life was none of her business. Have you seen that woman’s nails? I’m not gonna go there.”***
I liked how Vance and Jules both didn’t have much family and so they understood that section of each other’s lives. Jules has never really even had a boyfriend so she is so uncomfortable with everything she is feeling, so the logical thing to do is try to break up with Vance..we all know how well that goes down with the Alpha men of KA-land.. Still it is funny how many times she tries to end it just to have Vance pull her back in.
Another couple that is perfect for each other in so many ways. So again another good story with fun times with hilarious characters and something that just always drags me in until the final page.
This was following that same line with a good amount of humor and I decided, you know what? Even though these are predictable, they are still well written and I like them. I'll continue on, no matter.
And then, WHAM!!!! Huge plot twist. Tears ensue...loss of breath! It was quite unpredictable and fabulous! The author is setting you up that Jules is pregnant and instead of that...BAM!
Definitely worth the read! Highly recommend!
I have a lot of mixed feelings on this one. For the most part, I liked it. But when I sat back and thought about the book, some things were off. Vance really came across as very creepy to me in the beginning. This is my 41st book I've read by Ashley so I understand her alpha males, but breaking into someone's house and crawling into bed with them while they sleep after only talking once was WAY too big of a leap for me. He got better the second half of the book, but his actions after that were also way too fast.
What I loved about this book was Jules, she was a kick butt heroine who literally went after drug dealers, pranking them and well.... kicking butt! She had some issues, but it wouldn't be a KA novel if the heroine or hero didn't so it worked very well.
This is a fast and fun read, not my favorite by KA but still enjoyable.
Having done that, my thoughts wondered about some of the characters I'd read about. A friend recommended that I continue to read the rest of the Rock Chicks books. I bought RENEGADE and just finished it.
Outside the different action, everything is the same and I'm finding I have less patience for this than I used to (and I hadn't had a great deal of patience to begin with).
The repetitive nature of each book gnaws at me. I love Ms. Ashley's work, have read almost everything she's written and apparently there's a niche for this series, I just think I've aged of out of that niche.
I also didn't like the grammatical and editorial errors. Jarring.
Having said all that, she's still in my TBR list, close to the top.
Jules and Vance's story was more emotional for me. Their backgrounds were so heartbreaking.
The Law/Jules was awesome - a social worker who cared so much about her "kids."
Vance was another Hot Bunch/Nightingale dude. I LOVED Vance in previous Rock Chick books and was excited to get his story.
Renegade had action, the sweet (those Nightingale boys can give the sweet!), the Rock Chick girls (can they be my friends?!), family (it's not always blood!), and it will give you some tears.
I recently finished this book and am already considering an entire re-read of the series! SO So GOOD!
