3.5 stars--ROCK COURTSHIP is the second storyline in Nalini Singh’s contemporary, new adult Rock Kiss romance series focusing on the four members of the rock group Schoolboy Choir. This is drummer David Rivera and the band’s PR consultant Thea Arsana’s storyline. Rock Courtship is a friends to lovers storyline that follows the ‘courtship’ of David and Thea. Although this is the second in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I always recommend reading a series in order to understand the background and history of the characters.

Told from two close third person POVs, we follow David as he endeavors to convince Thea that they would be perfect for one another but as the band’s PR consultant Thea is reluctant to become involved with her client. Following the devastating heartbreak of her previous relationship, Thea pulls no punches when she tells David that they would be better off as friends. Thea isn’t willing to risk their friendship for what could amount to a one-night stand.

The relationship between Thea and David is one of mutual attraction, one that began a couple of years earlier when Thea was involved with another man. David has bided his time hoping that Thea would give him a chance, but Thea’s heart has been broken and she refuses to allow anyone that close –ever again. Betrayal is ugly and trust must be earned.

The secondary characters include David’s family, the members of Schoolboy Choir as well as Molly, Thea’s sister and the heroine from the first storyline Rock Addiction. The world building continues to reveal a little bit of information about the band members and how they came to be.

After the bitter disappointment that was Rock Addiction I had my doubts about Nalini Singh' s ability to write a contemporary series as addicting as her paranormal ones. Well, I am glad to be proven wrong as Rock Courtship was everything that Rock Addiction was not. Drummer David has loved the band's publicist Thea from afar, watched as her no good fiancee breaks her heart and later had to nurse his own broken heart after he took a chance and asked her out. Still, he can't get over her so encouraged by Thea' s sister Molly he decides to go for broke and writes her a memo detailing all of the reasons why she should give them a chance. Thea, fresh from an ugly break up is understandably leery of risking her heart again despite of the attraction she has always felt for David. However, she didn't count on David's determination to make her his and she soon finds herself being swept off her feet despite her reservations.

Beta heroes are a weakness of mine and so are unrequited love plots. So, this book had two huge pluses going for it before I even started reading. Just a few pages in and I was already head over heels in love with David. Known as the Gentleman of Rock for his old fashioned ways and his style. He was sweet, sexy and so stinking cute when it came to his feelings for Thea and boy did he ever burn up the sheets. It's always the quiet ones you have to watch out for. The love scenes were super steamy and unlike RA the love scenes were organic to the story, they felt natural as opposed to gratuitous. I also liked Thea she, unlike Molly in RA, didn't annoy the day lights out of me and even though she was a knock out, exotic, high powered publicist I found her far more relatable than Molly who was supposed to be a regular plain Jane.

This novella is a follow-up to ROCK ADDICTION in the Rock Kiss series featuring Thea and David's story. David, a drummer for one of rock's hottest bands, loves Thea to distraction. As Thea is the band's publicist, she firmly rejects his advances slamming the door on any possible relationship. Thea has also been deeply wounded having had her "heart stomped on once by a cheating, lying..." finance who has all but ruined her ability to trust and, for Thea, trust is all. She has a front row seat and a backstage pass to the rock star life plus David's client status makes having a relationship with him a violation of her biggest taboos. David almost gives up on romancing her when Molly, Thea's half-sister, provides him with an idea of how to get under her very protective skin by writing a memo "about all the reasons why you'd be perfect together" because she knows Thea will not be able to resist replying back.

And thus begins their courtship using the written word which resurrects the traditional way lovers used to communicate in letters brought into the 21st century with technology. Thea is stunned, intrigued, and turned on by David's memo and tries to logically and practically rebuff him again. One of the interesting things about this trope is that it requires Thea and David to carefully consider each word before replying. In direct conversation, Thea can easily shut David down as a knee jerk reaction from her personal rules against dating David while also protecting her bruised heart. But now, Thea has to consider his heartfelt, sexy, and compelling thoughts which get to her in a way that she cannot ignore. The written word has such power to break, mend, or win a heart in a way like no other.
