"Trust me, Ms. Baird?"
"Not when you smile like that."

THE STORY: Charlotte Baird has hidden herself in ill fitting clothes and a mousey personality. After a horrible incident in her past, Charlotte set about protecting herself in as many ways as possible. Her steady date for the past year is more interested in talking about his hobbies than getting physical with Charlotte and that is the way she likes it. When the failing company she works for hires a new CEO to turn around the company, Charlotte is intimidated by the large athletic strong man. She nicknames him T-Rex as he chews up the upper ranks of the company.

Gabriel Bishop is an ex-professional rugby player who has made a name for himself as a turnaround artist for failing companies. Gabriel is protective of the mouse he sees in Charlotte but it intrigued at the glimpses of the strong woman that he sometimes sees.

OPINION: I loved this book because of the strong, complex characters of Charlotte and Gabriel. Their relationship is incredibly beautiful and I really like that their relationship takes time to develop. I appreciated that the book allows the characters to acknowledge the dangers of office romances and especially boss/employee relationships. While those issues are quickly dismissed, the characters at least do acknowledge those issues.

Charlotte's story is incredibly sad and yet she has survived and managed to create a decent life for herself. I don't want to give away the exact nature of her past as information is disclosed to readers in the same way that Gabriel learns the truth. The scenes are powerful and heart wrenching.

Gabriel is my favorite part of this book. He is an alpha hero and yet is incredibly thoughtful, caring and protective.

I've read all of this author's books in the archangel series and in the Psy changeling series. Loved some, liked some. All had real passion and I cared for the characters. So I'm a fan.

This book, well. I just don't know. I did like both characters. A lot. And I appreciated how hard Charlotte worked to heal herself. It just didn't make for an exciting plot. Too much on the sad side. I didn't like being reminded why she was the way she was. I didn't want the tension in the story to be whether or not she had a panic attack.

When I read romance, it's to escape. And if there be magical monsters and magic, oh my! I love it even more. There's got to be something that makes me feel like I walked away from the real world into a fabulous fantasy world, and this one was too steeped into reality of abuse. I loved that the heroine Charlotte overcame it on her own, that her alpha didn't do it for her. He was there to support, but she did it.
But god there was no escape from the real world in this one for me.

Just the wrong plot line for me. Won't ever pick this up for a re-read.

Despite being an avid reader, there are very few romance authors I'm willing to purchase on an 'OH GOD THEY HAVE ANOTHER BOOK TAKE MY MONEY' basis. That being said, when it comes to a Nalini Singh book it could be my last five dollars and I'd still fork it over to Kindle so I could read her latest masterpiece. Then when I got enough money I'd probably buy it from the bookstore because I'm weird like that and prefer the real deal over electronic mind numbing ebooks.

So, when I got the notice in my inbox that I was going to be able to read Nalini's latest novel in the Rock Kiss Series, Rock Hard, I reacted like a five year old whose mother finally gave them cookies.

Before I delve into my rant on why this book was f-ing amazing, here is the back cover blurb:

Wealthy businessman Gabriel Bishop rules the boardroom with the same determination and ruthlessness that made him a rock star on the rugby field. He knows what he wants, and he’ll go after it no-holds-barred.

And what he wants is Charlotte Baird.

Charlotte knows she’s a mouse. Emotionally scarred and painfully shy, she just wants to do her job and remain as invisible as possible. But the new CEO—a brilliant, broad-shouldered T-Rex of a man who growls and storms through the office, leaving carnage in his wake—clearly has other plans. Plans that may be equal parts business and bedroom.

If Charlotte intends to survive this battle of wits and hearts, the mouse will have to learn to wrangle the T-Rex. Game on.

Where do I even begin? I adored this book. More so even than the first two, which were both magnificent! The Rock Kiss Series begins with Rock Addiction, which is Molly and Fox's story and is much more a carnal read than the following stories in the series.

This is the first book I've read from beginning to end by this author and hopefully not my last. I hadn't been attracted to her fantasy/PNR books in the past, as the premise of them just didn't appeal to me, but when I saw she was writing a contemporary romance, decided to try this. So glad I did, this romance just about had it all and really shows what a smart writer Singh is - you get both the male and female POV, they both have troubles from their past to overcome, there is a sense of equality between them, his attraction to her is based on something real ("smart women are his catnip"), this is NOT a wham bam romance but one where they slowly and believably become more intimate. I think that's what really made me fall in love with the hero, how patient he is with the heroine in this regard - it really shows he loves her.

This review is coming from someone who usually avoids the subordinate/boss office romance. I dislike it when the woman is always made to be in the weaker position which is the usual in this type of set-up, but the way Singh has written this, you see how she empowers the heroine so that the relationship is a mutual rescue. I'd normally try to read the others in a series, but really not a fan of anything starring a male rock star/musician/actor type so here's hoping that Singh's next contemporary story features another type of hero - businessman, athlete, lawyer, military, professor, banker whatever, but please no one from the entertainment industry cuz I find the idea of a monogamous relationship with those guys really unbelievable.
