They radically quickened punk's tempos, added virtuoso instrumentation, and topped it all off with the mystic squeals of shaman-like frontman Paul "H.R." Hudson. This disc, produced (oddly enough) by ex-Cars leader Ric Ocasek, gives voice to the band's scathing sociopolitical judgment (see "Big Takeover") as well as its ability to simply put the hammer down and rock ("At the Movies"). Preordered this months ago and did not know what to expect. Received the Bad Brains Records/ORG Music reissue (ORGM-2181) on standard black vinyl. Sticker states "Remastered by Dave Gardner at Infrasonic Mastering". Compared to my 1983 Metrotube/PVC pressing, it's faithful to the original. The original has a weird echo where you faintly hear the song a few seconds before the groove starts (a common problem for "cheap wax"). It also displays some sibilance that's especially evident on the reggae tracks. The reissue fixes those problems, but still sounds a bit more subdued. Most importantly, if fixes the speed problem that plagued CDs from the last 30 years. The cover is almost identical, smaller text, and darker band photo (either my original is faded or it was washed out). It has obviously been recreated from scratch and photo reproduced from original print or negative. This is not a cheap reissue where they photocopy from another record. I still slightly prefer the original pressing, but this one will serve as a player.

This gets five stars because it's BAD BRAINS, and it's a great record. But as you may have noticed, some others have said that this speed is wrong on this version, that's it's too fast, and that's no joke. I'm not sure who thought speeding up the world's fastest band was a good idea, but it wasn't. The CD is unlistenable the way it is (0 stars).

If you rip your CDs and listen to music on a media player though, you can open up the files in Audacity to correct the speed. I used the original LP as a reference and you want to decrease the speed of the CD rips by 6.5%. Interesting note though - the reggae songs were NOT sped up on the CD. So if you go in and slow down the files, don't slow down tracks 5, 10, 15 and 20, you can leave them as they are.

A masterpiece but the production is horrific!

I had this on cassette in the mid-80's and I swear the production on that cassette was not as bad as the production on this CD. Maybe the CD shows the flaws more than a cassette but this sounds like poop. So many elements of the band's brilliance are lost in the tinny production. Even with bass turned all the way up there's no richness to the sound. I wanted to loan this to a mainstream heavy metal fan but I don't think I will because the amazing songs are lost in the horrific production. I've been listening to punk for 30+ years and when I put on a punk records my ears know to adjust to horrible production and I've gotten used to it but really...this CD just sound bad. I hope someone gets to work on this and reissues a digitally remastered version because this record is a masterpiece. Ric Ocasek produced this. His name is in giant letters inside. Really? If I was him I wouldn't want my name on it.

Along with Black Flag's Damaged and Husker Du's New Day Rising this has to be the must-have American 80's Hardcore album. The punk - reggae crossover has been done before and after but never with such ferocity or authenticity.

The first play will blow you away but unlike a lot of one dimensional punky noise, new facets and dimensions will open up with subsequent listening. This record is a masterpiece and really should be in the collection of anyone with a passing interest in what real from the soul hardcore was all about
