About the Author

Katherine Charlton Calkins teaches in the music department at Mt. San Antonio College where she spent eight years on the all-college general education committee and then served as chair of the music department for the following ten years. During a yearlong sabbatical in 2007-2008 she studied women composers and compiled biographies, recordings, and listening guides, which she made available to her colleagues to help them add more women to their music appreciation and history classes. As a performer, she has a degree in classical guitar from California State University at Fullerton. She toured in Southern France and Tuscany, playing lute with an early music group led by her late, first husband Andrew Charlton and his friend Gloria Ramsey, both well known in the field of early music. Calkins also played percussion and toured in Japan with the CSUF Wind Ensemble. She got her M.A. in music history and has continued with further graduate study in that same field. As a teacher, she started the guitar program at Mt. San Antonio College, where she continues to teach music history, music appreciation, and history of rock music. Her first book, Rock Music Styles: A History, is now out in its sixth edition, published by McGraw-Hill Higher Education. Experience Music is her second book.

A year ago I had taken a history of rock and roll class during a summer term. Turns out this book covers music from the very beginning, I'm talking about the foundation of a simple note played. It gives clear cut history how music transformed slavery and the church. This book also shows you the domino effect of progress from ostinato piano to big band, the blues to country, rock to hip hop, and it is all intertwined! I definitely have a new outlook on music and its origins. Not only did this book change my thoughts on what music is, it had shown me what music could be for me in this day in age. Worth a read, shoot..it's worth a skim because there is so much vital information. Awesome read!

I have to use this book for my History of Rock Music class and while some of the information is pertinent and good. Other items are randomly placed. She excels at writing the listening guides. However my real issue with the book is that there aren't any source notes in the entire book. It's almost as if all the information appeared from nowhere and formed itself into this book. Now this is a college textbook and every other book I have used for school has numerous annotations and source notes. How did the author get away with not having any?

This book has a lot of information. It touches on a lot of history with a compact nature. The information is to the point and interesting. It does very well in pointing out the pertinent information needed for a test bank.

I only ordered this book because it was required for my online college music class. The book itself was good; it contained a lot of information, and the discussion questions at the end of the chapters were good and thought provoking. I'm glad I only rented this book, because besides needing it for a class, I may never open it again.
