Roller coaster rides have nothing on this twisted romantic suspense. JA Huss, true to her craft starts off what you think will be a story of love and fame lost then found with some bumps along the way, but oh no, this is a jolt into the psychological thriller realm right out of the gate (well at least after the Prologue). Rock is flawed for sure and what you think his truth to be one moment is spun around and thrown backwards as something else entirely. Each character brings their own twist to the mix. This is the kind of story where each one can easily have a book of their own to tell their own back story. This is a read 2+ times for sure. So many elements of surprise, always the hot sexy stuff JA does so well and the curveballs throughout. Great ride! So as I say to my fellow Shrikers, BUCKLE UP!!!!

This book may just be Julie's most complex, twisted story yet!

Rowan Kyle Saber, known to his friends and family as RK, known to the rest of the world as Rock, lead singer of Son of a Jack. In love with his childhood sweetheart, who happens to be an identical twin. After suffering a horrific tragedy, RK leaves home with the intentions of never returning and forms a brand new family in the five members of his band. All he wants to do now is make music and live the rock star life.

But like that Rolling Stones song says, "You can't always get what you want." After suffering another horrific tragedy, he's forced to go home, to recuperate and sit still while an investigation is under way to determine what happened that caused the loss of 3 of his band members.

Right from the very beginning of this book, Julie had me questioning what was real and what was imagined. What was truth and what was created by RK's mind. Because RK can't remember. He thinks he remembers what happened 5 years ago, but is what he remembers what really happened? Or is it just what his mind fabricated as a means to protect himself from the truth? This time around, he can't remember at all what happened with his band. And the only surviving member is in a coma and can't tell him anything.

Now he's home, where he doesn't want to be, facing things he doesn't want to face. Will being home help him remember what happened, in both tragedies? I'm not going to comment any further on it because honestly I don't think I could even try and offer an intelligent opinion. You just have to get the book, strap your seatbelt tight, and hang on for the ride.

My mind is blown! Completely, utterly blown. Rock is even more twisted than Huss’ other stories, and I was riveted to my kindle today, unable to stop reading until I got to the bottom of all the mysteries.

Huss definitely blew me away with this story! Until the very end, I had no idea what was going on, or what would happen next, and I was just as anxious as Rock was to figure things out. There was so much heartache and darkness, but at the same time, RK was so driven. He was filled with red-hot anger at the beginning, and he really didn’t understand what was going on. And I didn’t either. However, I was immediately drawn into the story, and I not only wanted, but needed to figure things out alongside RK. Even if I’m used to Huss’ twists and crazy turns, I don’t think I was fully prepared for the ones that happened here.

And I have to say that the summary for Rock is perfect! It sets the tone for the story, and it gives you just enough to know it’s going to be extremely juicy, and that you have to read it. The fact that there is both past and present, and that RK has had more than a few pains and troubles in his life. I am not going to say much more, because I don’t want to spoil a single little thing. I do have to tell you that you should pick this up, though, it’s a fantastic story with a good pace, characters to love (and some to hate on!) and so many things going on at the same time you will be dizzy before you finish reading.

Written in first person point of view from RK’s perspective, past tense to separate what happened in the past, and present tense to make sure we experience everything at the same time as he does, with the same hopes, dreams, nightmares, expectations and fears to share the present. There are some truly amazing dialogues as well, and Rock is exactly my kind of dark, mysterious romance.

When going in to a JA Huss book, I think you should go in blind. Know that she won't disappoint you with her stories and the characters, but she WILL mess with your brain and your logic.
So, I knew a little about this book before starting it. I tried to stay away from any teasers because that's just too much. "A rockstar book unlike anything you've ever read before." It sure was! We don't get true "rock star" status, but we get a background to who RK/Rowan Kyle/Rock was, who he is and who he tries to be. And they all are very different people. That's what made this story all kinds of messed up. Who is he? Who are his bandmates? What happened to them all? Who is Melissa/Melanie? Seriously....who is everyone and what is true and what is not? So many questions.
I liked the twist that it started out with a major prologue, but then brought you back to the past to see who these people were and then back to the present. All told from Rock's POV, with a side of amnesia stemming from an incident. But is it amnesia? Is anything what it seems? Who is hiding what and is anyone there to really protect RK from himself? Those are all questions that may be revealed on the twisty roads of Colorado.
"You're the kind of guy who breaks up families, and drives drunk, and ruins lives. You ruin people, Rock...."
But is that really Rock? Because as things proceed, we learn he never really wanted to be the rockstar he became. He did things to run away from who he was.
Thank you for another twisted-mountain road ride, Julie. I didn't see things coming, but I felt like I was given crumbs throughout the story to get me part of the answers. But I still questioned each and every person until the very end. And THAT's what you do best.
