I bought the first novel in this series, Rock Deadly, because I am a big fan of the rock group Rush, and I enjoyed that book for its many inside jokes, though I found it a bit disappointing as a mystery. However, I was amused and interested enough to seek out this sequel.
Rock Til You Drop contained fewer fan-humor references (and I appreciate that the author would want to move on from such a limiting trope), which removed some of the fun for me. Unfortunately, that change wasn't associated with a corresponding improvement in the complexity and interest level of the plotting of the mystery itself. Rock Til You Drop shared with Rock Deadly an overreliance on deus ex machina and unforeseeable family connections.
On a brighter note, the main character, Lerxst Johnson, remains a likable young man, and his naivete about criminal matters seems appropriate given his "civilian" background, and I do appreciate the author's inclusion of strong female secondary characters. While some might complain about Lerxst's improbably unusual household/family, that aspect of setting and characterization seemed to "work." While I was disappointed in this outing (relative to fun I had reading Rock Deadly), I will probably pick up the third volume in the series when it becomes available, as long as the Kindle price remains reasonable.
