Our Story

RockDove was created for five birdwatchers of the Los Angeles Audubon Society in 2002. They were our customers, when we weren't yet a slipper company, but a beachside workshop in Santa Monica, California that resoled hiking boots. For fifteen years we protected the feet of avid adventurers as they trekked punishing terrains across southern California's mountains and deserts. As their local shoe cobbler, when customers had footwear needs, they came to us. And over time they asked for something that was badly missing, not in their time conquering the outdoors but in their lives at home—quality indoor shoes to console their high-mileage, trail-weary feet. So for Christmas that year, we handmade five pairs of slippers for our long time Audubon customers using a low-cut boot last.

The Experiment

Shoe brands in southern California, where sunny beaches and flip flops rule, don't pay much attention to slippers. So we had little to build on. However, we did know how to make comfortable, long lasting footwear. Using mattress memory foam, gel insoles, anti-shock cushioning from hiking boots, and more, we designed slippers with the goal of comforting extremely tired feet. Two months later when we sent out a newsletter about our little experiment, customers responded with 350 mail orders. We named our slippers after the most mundane bird we knew, the rock dove (pigeon) often seen strutting the boardwalks of Santa Monica Pier. They’re a memento of where we’re from and what we represent.

To this day our legacy of creating footwear as if for the most exhausted, adventure-wearied feet lives on. But adventure isn’t always hanging on a rope off the side of a mountain. Everyone lives their own version of it, every single day. We make slippers so that anyone who’s on their feet all day—not just passionate outdoorsmen but teachers, chefs, nurses, cashiers, traffic cops, postal workers, and more—can count on switching into the world’s most comfortable slippers once they get home.

The Sweet Spot Comfort Level

Our quest to get comfort down to a science pushed us to become one of the earliest adopters of high-density memory foam in slippers. In 2004, we reached out to local sleep experts at the Long Beach Mattress Company to source their memory foam toppers, which we then molded into insoles. But mattress comfort didn't exactly translate to slipper comfort. So we obsessively tweaked the density and firmness ratings of our foams to create that “sweet spot” level: one that offers incredible comfort, yet not so much cushioning that you’ll feel like walking in quicksand. Today, at the heart of each RockDove slipper is a multilayered foam construction—a 40-70D memory foam pressure-mapped to every part of the plantar aspect, a support foam that adds firmness, and an anti-shock EVA.

From designer silhouettes, vibrant colors, to bold prints that never before found their way onto slippers, RockDove is out to prove that mundane can be beautiful.	Heart of a Slipper, Sole of a Sneaker The first RockDove's were made for our outdoor-loving clients who, even at home, actively shuffle in and out of the house for chores and hobbies. Staying true to our roots, every pair of RockDove’s comes with an indoor outdoor sole. Made of the same natural rubber used in trail running sneakers, they’ll let you walk to the mailbox or backyard without switching shoes. We also added an anti-shock EVA layer to reduce impact when you step on the occasional living room Lego or driveway pebble.

I usually wear a size 6.5 shoe, sometimes a 7 in sneakers. Based on the info given I ordered a 7, when they came they were huge. Not even close to fitting. So I sent them back and got a 6, fit just right! These slippers are very soft and cushy, and SO cute. I love them! I wore them quite a bit for the first couple days, and then and hour or two here and there. By the end of the first week the sole was complete flattened out, theres no cushion left at all by my heels, and very very little by my toes. They have also stretched out really bad width wise (I'm assuming from walking in them???) and are loose to the point I can hardly keep them on my feet. Theyre also super drafty now since they're so loose, which kinda defeats their whole purpose. I never wore these anywhere besides in the house, on normal carpet, so to have them be this worn in the course of a week is mind boggling to me. I tried emailing the company but got no response, and of course I already threw out all the packaging so returning to Amazon isn't an option. Very unhappy with paying this much money for only a weeks' worth of use!

This is a revised review. I purchased these in November of 2018 and wore them only during the colder months, so they had LESS than one year's worth of wear and ONLY indoors. I probably wore them for a total of 8 months or so. They started out too small but stretched to fit. However, now they are too big. And even worse, the sole has a hole. I wrote to the manufacturer but they have not responded. I can no longer recommend them. My old slippers for which these were a replacement, lasted for years.

Below is my original review from 2018.

I did not take the advice of some reviewers and order a size up. I stuck with my normal size of 10 (women's). Right out of the bag, the toe was a tad short and nevertheless, the heel was slightly loose and my foot lifted a bit with walking. But I broke them in and they are now fine after molding to my foot. This was my third attempt at slippers on line after having gone to 2 stores with no success. So five times the charm. The manufacturer, Lace and Lawn, makes other lines of slippers and some of them seem to offer a more secure fit - check them out.

I bought these for my Mum but i tried these on before gifting them to see if they fit and they feel amazing! Very supportive and warm. She's normally a 7 1/2 to 8 depending on brand (she has wide feet) but i bought size 9 to be safe. Apparently they were a little tight to begin with, but after walking in them for a while they relaxed and were supportive.
Visually, they're really bright, lovely slippers - i've seen quite a few slippers with the kind of memory foam support that i was looking for, but the larger sizes tend to have only neutral/natural colours. It's a bit boring honestly, so when i saw these it was more about the colours and pattern than size (though luckily they do fit!). Might buy another pair in another colour in the future, for mum.. or myself =p

I was a bit skeptical about the size when it came to these slippers because lots of reviews said they were coming up small.
I usually take a 6.5 or a 6 wide fit so I ordered up and got a 7 which seemed to be a good bet (I also looked at the size chart and measured my foot). I think the size 8 would have been a bit too big. The slippers are a snug fit but I can already feel they are stretching a little.

The pattern on them is beautiful and the hard soles make them really comfy and feel like they will last a good while.
