"Rock-A-Billy Cowboys" is a fine collection of songs, much of them are very rare and hard to find. I was very surprised to find a lot of songs that I had never heard before, plus some that I have. All together, this collection of 250 songs makes a great addition to anyone's collection of rockabilly (and country) collection. The sound quality is excellent throughout, and the selection of songs is just fabulous. Definitely worth the money! You will enjoy hearing this collection over and over again.

Review of “Rockabilly Cowboys”

10 cd set; 25 tracks per cd; from “Documents” records.

Comments about this set apply also to the set “Rockabilly Dynamite”. The two sets go together. There is no duplication of tracks between the two sets as far as I can tell.

Each disk runs about 55 minutes. Although the record company could have put more tracks on each disk, 25 tracks at 55 minutes is enough. With more than 55 minutes, I fade out. No booklet or track info. Disks come in cardboard sleeves.

D6 is flawed from the manufacturer. It has only 24 tracks instead of 25. The last track is missing. It is sung by Faron Young. The flaw was on two sets that I got. The whole set is still well worth it.

I recommend both sets from Document. I can’t think of other sets that do as good a job for the same money. I got mine for $14 plus SH from Rarewaves. Proper Records has two sets of 4 disks each, 30 tracks per disk, “Boppin Hillbilly to Red Hot Rockabilly” and “Classic Rockabilly”. Each Proper set costs as much as this one set. It is worth getting all four sets if you can. Rhino has two sets of Rockabilly but neither set has this kind of country rockabilly and the Rhino sets are really expensive now.

This is what you DON’T get from “Rockabilly Cowboys”. There are a handful of cuts by the big names such as Cash and Perkins but they are not what the set is about. If you want a big name, then you have to buy a set of their work. You don’t get “greatest hits” or tracks that rose high on the charts. You don’t get too many novelty songs or sappy teen love songs. You do get a few. You don’t get a representative sample of everything on the air then that called itself rockabilly or country rockabilly.

As I did with the box sets Rock-A-Billy-Rave and Wild & Frantic Rock 'n' Roll from the same distributor, I won't make this review any longer than it's going to be just by listing the 250 tracks you will be getting in this equally-fantastic box with excellent ADD sound reproduction (both mono and stereo). The 10 discs come in individual cardboard sleeves with the same cover picture on each, inside a hinged cardboard box. There are no liner notes nor discography, but if pure old-time Rockabilly is among your favorites needless to say you'll be getting your fill here and at a fantastic price. And there's relatively very little lap-over from the Rock-A-Billy Rave set. Many of the names will be familiar - others not so much - and you will find national hits here and there - but it's all driving Rockabilly. Many of the artists included are in The Rockabilly and/o The Rock & Roll Halls Of Fame. Enjoy.
