Fastest reader I've found, I carry it everywhere

This reader isn't perfect, but it is really fast.

Pros:
* Actual USB 3.0 (I have a dozen readers that turned out to be 2.0)
* Fastest reader I've found (with the right media)
* Affordable!

Cons:
* Gets hilariously hot
* Sometimes the media is difficult to remove, but I have always managed.

There are a few negative reviews for this product, but they are the minority. It is awfully inexpensive so I guess there could be quality issues for some, but I own 4 now and have had zero problems. Since the quality of microSD memory modules varies greatly (see my reviews) I think that is probably the culprit. I recommend a fast module like the Samsung Pro Plus or SanDisk Extreme. My photo shows a copy in progress at 90MB/sec from a Samsung Pro Plus.

The heat is really something, probably because the reader is so small there is just nowhere for the heat to go. I'm not worried about the electronics, which are safe to about 185 degrees F (85C). But it can get almost too hot to touch, and I plan to add a couple heatsinks to get this under control. There are inexpensive adhesive heatsinks designed for the Raspberry Pi here on Amazon that would work. I will use one on each side of the grip.

Of course, you can always use a cloth or just wait a few minutes for it to cool down.

Solid Product!

The card reader has been working well up until now, and I haven’t had any problems using it (After 5 months at the time I wrote this review). Its size it is really good to be carried everywhere. It is a little bigger than a quarter. Although, if you wonder about carrying it on a keychain the answer is no. There is no hole or a key ring to put it on your keychain. I didn’t really care about this as I thought of disassembling it to use in a project that I planned on getting to someday. So keep that in mind if you were looking for some kind of pen-drive keychain.

The material from which this product was made out of doesn’t feel sloppy as other SD readers I have seen out there. Further to my previous comment about disassembling it, I found that it is difficult to do so because all is really closed made of an only solid plastic case. It is not made of two parts that just pop up to be opened. So although I wasn’t expecting to be that way, this is a positive point just because it’s shown to be a good product after all.

I like the fact that instead of putting the micro SD card on the back, it goes into the usb tip. I also have to mention that there isn’t any cap to cover the tip, which it can be a disadvantage. The SD card fits kind of tight inside the slot, so it is very improbable that it will fall down due to the lack of a cap. Yet, you still have to be careful and keep an eye on it if you’re on your way down to somewhere and as the saying goes “better safe than sorry”.

Rocketek Burns H.O.T.

Background: I operate a 2017 Mac Air and chose this over the newer Macbook Pro line due to USB availability. I also enjoy using Micro SD (MSD) cards as a poor man's partion drive system and so I hve files compartmentalized by MSDs. I carry around my cards in a very convenient "DimeCard Micro 8" carrier which is the size of a credit card. My SD slot has a 256GB MSD which doubles the memory on my Mac Air.

The Review: I have a USB 2.0 MSD to USB that is the size of a wireless mouse dongle so its pretty small but its 2.0 tech so I thought that I would upgrade to 3.0. After searching for something as small as my previous adapter without success, I decided on the "Rocketek 3.0" for its relative size and cost. It protrudes from the USB port a little more than one half inch, more than double my 2.0 adpater. With the 2.0 I could leave it in and not worry about snag but with the newer Rocketek, I would have to remove it before travel. This was acceptable to me as I have my MSD carrier and it would be used as required. So form, function, etc... all good but there is one major flaw and concern.

This little drive gets hot, hot, HOT to the touch. I have fairly heat resistant fingers but if I hold onto this device with my thumb and index finger... I can't hold onto it while plugged in. You will literally remove your fingers and rub them together, its that hot. The concern here is obvious. I don't know if this will damage my MSD or cause other problems down the road. You might say not to leave it in for long periods of time but it gets that hot near instantly.

Due to this concern, I don't plan on using this device at all unless under dire circumstances... as my back up to the back up. So beware of this issue before you buy. You may be more risk tolerant than me but my data is little bytes of family to me and one of my most critical resources. Of course everything I have is backed up but that isn't the point. The point is that using this device doesn't necessarily solve my accesibility problem, it instead creates a liability.

Just wanted to share my thoughts and opinions. I hope it helps.

Hot Enough to Burn

I use this adapter with a MicroSD for Tesla's DashCam and Sentry modes. Today I was transferring files to my laptop for review and the adapter got so hot it burned my fingers and I was unable to remove it from my laptop for ~30 minutes. I'm highly concerned about an external device getting this hot. It will eventually destroy the MicroSD, and it also raises concerns of safety, especially when the device is sitting in a hot car that is writing video to it continuously.

I absolutely DO NOT recommend this product.

One thing I dislike about many other card readers for USB is that when you use them, the micro SD extends outside the rest of the unit. You just need to bump it once the wrong way for that edge of your micro SD card to snap off and then your card (and data) is gone. So this one puts the card inside the USB connector and while mine hasn't gotten too warm from using it, it seems to be working OK with casual use of the micro SD card. For me, just having the micro SD card shielded from an accidental bump is the reason I got this one and it seems to do the job.

My Dell Venue Pro 5056 has a bad micro SD card slot inside so a USB reader is my only option. For me, this worked with my Sandisk 200GB card formatted with NTFS and I haven't had any problems yet.

I recently purchased a USB hub. When it arrived, I was disappointed to find that my current usb sticks would not fit in side by side because the ports were too close together. I reviewed and pointed out this annoyance, but since doing some investigating and found that this Rocketek micro SD card to USB is the idea companion as 4 of them will fit perfectly side by side in the USB hub. THis is because the width of the USB reader is narrow enough not to restrict its neighbour, unlike the scandisk varieties that I already had. OK the negatives, could be that if you want to carry this little device around, it does not have any cap, or lanyard hole, so it's really not ideal for portability. The SD card actually slides in front and beneath the USB plug part, not at the side or at the back of the device. Removing the card is slightly tricky, as there is no eject mechanism. However given my needs as above, it's perfect. SO, FULL MARKS. However, do be certain of what you want, as portability may not be its strong point!

BEWARE IT GETS VERY HOT!

I purchased this card reader as my new laptop was not equiped with a built in card reader. On my first use of the card reader I tried to back up approximately 30GB of data on to a SanDisk Ultra XC1 256GB card. The transfer was painfully slow so I went off to do something else. On my return I found my laptop had gone in to stand by and only about 5GB had actually been transferred, I touched the card reader and was alarmed to find it was very hot, so hot I decided to measure the temperature with an infrared thermometer which read back 35C (95F). I immediately stopped the file transfer for fear that the SD card would be damaged and took the temperature again which had gone down to 34.2C (93.5F) when I took the photo. I am aware that thumb drives can get warm to the touch but this was nothing I had experienced before. I will not be using it again any time soon...

Works well, ideal for using as a semi/permanent holder.
The micro SD card slots in to the USB male component becoming part of the stop-buffer that is inserted into the USB connector on the reading device. Getting the micro SD card back out is difficult as the slot does not offer an eject feature, which I have on other Micro SD card adapters, meaning you have to use your nail or tweezer to pull it out.

The microSD sits nice and snug inside the unit, and of course its nice and small, but no smaller than the old plastic one I used to use before buying this. YEs, its a nice sleek design, biggest flaw seems to be how incredibly hot it gets. My one has managed to heat up the corner of my laptop, and i am not even using it its just plugged in, clearly something not right about it, its too hot to touch.

If its just mine then so be it, but I will have to revert back to my plastic one which does not get hot in the slightest bit.
