The factory speakers in my 1994 Accord were certainly nothing to write home about; with their single-cone, all paper construction (even paper surrounds) and smallish magnets, they looked like they were pulled from a 1950s era console TV. And this was with Honda's "premium sound system," which included separate tweeters and a CD changer (broken long ago). When I got my first good look at them, I was surprised I hadn't blown them to bits with the Alpine head unit I'd installed. After swapping in these Rockford-Fosgates in the back, together with a pair of Blaupunkt 6 1/2" coax units up front, I was ready to be blown away.
(One caveat to installers: Being American-style 6x9s, the Rockford-Fosgate speakers' mounting holes may not match those of Japanese or European 6x9 units. Some drilling may be required; if--like my Honda--your car uses speaker mounting plates, you might want to purchase an extra pair, so you can use the originals with the factory speakers. If your car uses plug-in connectors for the speakers, be sure to use a pair of speaker adapter harnesses so you don't have to cut any wires.)
These speakers will play LOUD. Really loud, and clean. I was able to crank the Alpine up to painful levels, up to where I could hear its amplifier beginning to distort, without hearing any signs of speaker distress. That's the good news.
Compared to the smaller Blaupunkt drivers, though, the bass was somewhat less than I'd expected. On my previous car, which had the Blaupunkts all around, people would ask where I'd hidden the sub. Not so here; while there was plenty of bass (certainly far better than the factory dixie cups), the really deep, gut-shaking stuff was missing. OTOH, these speakers are brand new, while the Blaupunkts have a few thousand hours of use (they were originally placed in service in 1996); other users have noted the Rockford-Fosgates' bass will improve with time and use. I hope so.
I have always installed Kenwood speakers and I am very satisfied with those without an amp.
I was very excited when I bought Rockford Fosgate, but after installing them, I miss the highs and mid-low punches that Kenwood has always delivered. These speakers have very high mids and distortion usually ensues at high volumes. I had to turn up highs all the way to maximum and turn down mids all the way to minimum setting. That gave me some clarity of sound. But there seems to be something missing in my sound!
I don't know how they will work with an amp, but I have doubts over that, maybe an amp will add some clarity of sound and nothing more..
I would not suggest these as aftermarket replacement speakers to anyone looking for a clear audible sound.
