This book seemed to juggle too much. I felt like book 2 ended two fast, but I did like it. This one took forever with pieces everywhere that flew together at the ending.
This book was longer than 2 and much less enjoyable. Other reviewers said the author writes better when she writes shorter - those reviewers were not wrong.
This is going to contain some spoilers so look away now it that's going to bother you.
For one thing, PJ is starting to get on my nerves. That could be because I read the first three books in a couple of days and I hesitated to buy this one because I was worried it would happen but I wanted to know what happened with Dean, so I bought it.
Dean and PJ are having problems from the start. Basically, Dean thinks PJ should rise above her old friendships by doing things like putting away all of the old photos of Chase (PJ's dead best friend from a previous book who was a loveable loser). And not see ghosts. He sees her with two strangers and immediately decides the two are druggies because of how they look. And on and on and on... It doesn't fit to character. Dean was married to a pretty horrible person, met in book 2, and he handled that for 15 years but he's going to immediately jump to two people he hardly saw being druggies and not believe PJ when she says they aren't? If he was going to judge someone based on first impressions, he never would have dated PJ to begin with. I get the ghost stuff creeps him out, but he handled it before and after the second book when PJ used her gifts to help him, you'd think he'd try to be more open but apparently that went the other way - that could fit to character, but he seemed to be trying before this book. This book he just lectured her on the same issue two issues the entire time: have better friends and don't be weird.
Anyway, I'm done with this series.
I've enjoyed the previous Peri Jean stories, so I was really excited to get this. Peri Jean can be exasperating, mainly because of her self-loathing, and that's something most people can relate to. That leads her down some difficult paths, and some heartbreaking ones, but also down a couple that promise hope in the future. She also has a marvellously salty phrases that I've tried to memorise for future use.
The last quarter of the book kept me up way past my bedtime, and a few scenes destroyed me emotionally. If you want a story that brings in exciting, three-dimensional characters to life, this one is a must-read.
She has come to the time of reckoning when events that happened must meet there conclusion.
This story is tumultuous. Emotions are rampant. The cost that was set at the beginning of this venture is too high.
Excellent writing. Riveting storyline and character development.
Peri Jean is no cookie-cutter character. She’s elemental and damaged by a harsh life, yet she’s a loyal friend and a loving granddaughter. She’s just trying to keep all the balls in the air, while she strives to solve a mystery against the clock that could threaten the existence of everything she holds dear. It will keep you guessing all the way to the end.
I received a copy of Rock & Gravel in exchange for an honest review. That said, I would never recommend a book that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy. For the full Peri Jean experience, pick up ‘Forever Road’ and ‘Black Opal’. You won’t be sorry.
