The worst part about this model is the dust collection. The bag connects with a pretty poor square plastic design, which doesn't work well and offers no opportunity to hook up a dust collector. It falls off fairly easily and is a nuisance to put back on. The other problem is the dust bag itself is of low quality and it hangs down & drags. The wire bar that is supposed to hold the bag upward does keep it from dragging when it's installed properly, but even then it falls out of the hole it goes into the plastic (square) connector, and now after maybe 10 hours of usage I now have a hole in the bag. Dust is spewing everywhere! I'm writing this review as a skim through Amazon and try to find a replacement dust bag, which does not seem available. Rockwell.com does not show this sander as available anymore, and there is no way to buy the dust bag as an accessory. Maybe I call them. Or maybe I just write this review & move on.
This sander is quite loud, so I think hearing protection is a must. Maybe others are just as loud so maybe this is not a problem but an observation.
I will say that the tracking worked OK but just seemed a bit questionable. I only used brand named belts, and one had to be adjusted all the way in one direction, which made me wonder if other belts would be beyond this tools tracking ability.
I've had to take this apart a couple times. First only after using the tool for 30 minutes, I set it down. The next day, I tried to use it again. Nothing. I thought I was going crazy. It did smell a bit "electrical fire" like the night before, but I thought it was just because it was new. Considering I really needed this tool to work (no time for an RMA) I went ahead and opened it up to check for a loose connection or something. I found nothing out of the ordinary, so I then thought to inspect the graphite motor brushes. Turns out the spring was too compressed, so I stretched it a tad and the tool worked again. The second time I had to take it apart was to try & figure out why the dust collection wasn't working. That one was due to a couple larger splinters blocking things - I had been sanding down a small portion of a plywood subfloor before installing a new hardwood floor. Either way taking it apart has allowed me to see just how cheaply this tool was made.
Overall I feel this belt sander is probably on par with the other inexpensive belt sanders. I'm pretty sure they all have their issues. But for me I would rather have spent more money to have bought once rather than once again!
