I love to read series and was looking forward to this book but I was very disappointed. I had a difficult time liking the heroine. She came to find Ben because her sorry husband told her to on his deathbed, but she acted as if Ben owed her. She was unlikable and the book was slow all the way through. I found myself skimmimg through parts of it to get it read. I had a hard time believing any hero of a book would put up with her bad manners and would have cheered him if he had shown her the door

I did enjoy this story. Learning to trust is a two way street, and judging a book by it's cover is not always best. Ben takes in strays, and offers Callie a home, a job, and his trust. Callie, abused in her marriage, has become distrustful of anyone. The time and effort made by Ben to help her overcome her anger, and mistrust is life altering for her. But can Ben trust her? With his heart?

Too good to be true heroes can be just that, too good to be true. But if an author hides within them a great fatal flaw, the one thing that makes them human, and creates a worthy heroine to uncover that flaw, the results are very satisfying. I found myself feeling very satisfied as I read Rocky Mountain Redemption, the second in Pamela Nissen's historical series about a family of brothers who struggle with obstacles in life and love.

Dr. Ben Drake cares for everyone, from abandoned pets to neglected children to his stream of patients. His widowed sister-in-law, Callie, a woman with a past of abuse and a present need for aid, finds her way to his doorstep and into his heart. He is instantly smitten but she is a "wounded bird" in need of time and trust that such a wonderful man is interested in her. She doesn't realize Ben is human. He doesn't realize he is human and that his need for control masks his own lack of faith. Their romance is a endearing tale of redemption, grace, and the opportunities we are given to "let go and let God."

Pamela Nissen has the ability to write carefully detailed scenes, vignettes, which paint a picture of the past and bring it to life. Her characters are likable and even characters on the edge of the story are drawn with great care. Her romance pacing is realistic even as it is almost love at first sight for Ben. Most of all, she brings a faith message which is heartening to those who are new to a relationship with God or those who simply need to be reminded yet again of God's love. A great read for Valentines' month and beyond.

With a number of these books, it is easy to guess overall, how the story will end. While this one was easy to figure out, the journey getting there was quite fun to read. Every revelation makes your heart hurt for the heroine, Callie, just a little bit more, and makes you want to encourage Ben to help her. Moments in the book are just as surprising for the reader as they are for the character involved.

Out of the books in this particular series, this is probably among the best, in my opinion. It doesn't build too much off of any of the other stories, so it can easily be read on its own. What little back-story might be necessary is provided in the novel (but not in a way to interrupt the story).

Pamela Nissen has done it yet again by writing the second novel in her series with a book that is hard to put down. She continues to draw the reader into her characters as she brings them to life, with all of their twists and turns. This story takes place in Boulder, CO, in the late 1800s. We become acquainted with Ben Drake, brother of Joseph and Aaron whom we met her first book, "Rocky Mountain Match", and it also touches on brother Max, the family outcast. Ms. Nissen shows us the great compassion of this family, along with romance and intrigue. She has a gift for intertwining and revealing God's everlasting love for us, and of His forgiving grace. I can hardly wait to read her third book, "Rocky Mountain Proposal" which is scheduled for publication in May 2011. I highly recommend Pamela Nissen's books.
