Because of my total lack of experience with recording equipment, I ended up having to do multiple orders before I could use this. I needed a mic stand to hold it upright, even though I record at a desk, and a mixer to connect it to my computer. I also ended up having to build myself what I affectionately refer to as my "padded cell" to record inside, because the mic picks up echoes like crazy, but I guess that comes with the territory of using something this sensitive.
Now that I've got a fully working home studio in place, I couldn't be happier with it. The sound quality is fantastic and professional, which is all that matters, and even with all the add-ons, it's a really good value.
I'm using the NT1-A with an AudioBox USB and Windows 10, Adobe Auditon CC and Adobe Premiere CC. I have the mic set up in a walk in closet full of clothes which gives me a huge amount of sound dampening without any of the fuss or cost of a sound booth, and either run AC-7 Core HD, or use my wireless keyboard and mouse with a remote monitor (25 ft. HDMI cable) to manage my sessions via Adobe Audition. See the attached image.
The need to apply any effects or to do any background noise cleanup is completely gone - there simply is no background hum nor hiss of any kind as I've isolated properly from the noise of my PC fans.
I highly recommend watching the short videos provided on the Studio Tips DVD that they include with the mic. Understanding the cardioid polar pickup pattern and how it affects tone based on the rotation of the microphone is very valuable, among other tips and tricks that they provide.
- The Sennheiser MK-416 still resulted in the clearest, warmest sound, and quietest background noise when positioned properly (it's a directional / shotgun mic, so position is much more crucial than for a Cardioid like the Rode)
- The Rode NT1-A, however, was honestly not far off at all. The sound was a bit sharper at certain tones, but very clear. The background noise, while overall a bit louder than the Sennheiser, was significantly reduced--particularly at the higher frequencies, nearly nonexistent when looking at the spectral imaging.
- The Sennheiser is a $1,000 mic by itself...the Rode is $215 with an entire package of add-ons.
Bottom line: while the Rode NT1-A isn't quite on par with a top-end mic like the Sennheiser MK-416, it's really darn close--and a fraction of the price. I can honestly say it's the best value and deal I've found as far as microphones go, giving a surprisingly great quality while remaining even more surprisingly affordable.
In the end, while I will continue using my Sennheiser, I HIGHLY recommend anyone looking for a fantastic mic to use until you're ready to jump to the pricey, top-tier options, to try the Rode NT1-A. Best "bang-for-your-buck" microphone I've found, by far, and one that is good certainly enough for professional voiceover work. Five stars, hands down.
Boy, am I glad I did.
I strongly recommend this mic kit to anyone starting out with vocal recording. I am very impressed with the quality of this microphone, even more so given the reasonable cost.

The product came in a classic Amazon-taped box, with brown packaging paper for protection of the product. It was very easy to open. The product packaging itself is very frustration-free, and is very organized. Safety foam inside keeps the cord and microphone individually held in place in a safe environment. The SM6 shock mount and pop filter were in a separate box within the main product box.
I immediately noticed upon taking the XLR cord out of it's bag that it is quite long, which is very nice to have instead of buying one separately. The shock mount/pop filter are one piece, with many adjustments, and I am very appreciative to have these all come with the microphone as a bundle. I must say that the microphone is very high quality, even though it does not have much weight to it. You can notice the detail the Rode manufacturing puts in their products one by one.
Setting up the microphone was easy as pie. It sounds absolutely beautiful, and for the price, it is SO worth it. Very very crisp vocals. Really can only imagine that you are getting less than ideal sound from it if you have no acoustic treatment, or are screaming into it with super high clipping-levels manually. I have not tested that though. Regardless, you can listen to any video on YouTube or any song recorded by the NT1A, and it is so much better than other ones in this price range in my opinion. I have used many microphones but this takes the cake. No doubt there will be somewhat better ones in the price range of a few thousand dollars, but if you don't have that budget, go for this.
Any studio, whether a home, bedroom, or professional one needs this microphone. Especially at the price, you will get nothing like this. Rode does an excellent job, and I am pleased to be their customer.
Thank you Rode, and thank you for reading.
I own two, one was a gift and I liked it so much I bought a second one.
I read a one star review here complaining about the lack of a USB interface. Of course it doesn't have one unless specified, if you want a USB mic, you're looking in the wrong section. It's not a standard.
I've owned other condensers, like the AT2020, while that is a great affordable condenser, this one is a little sweeter.
Don't buy this if you want something to plug into your laptop. I use this with a Zoom H4N portable recorder. (You can set the inputs to have 48V phantom power)
Its easy to set up, is very aesthetically pleasing, and I personally have used it to mic up my guitar and to record my vocals. It sounds great - is really super sensitive and isn't crazy expensive. It is well worth the price tag - you won't be dissapointed
I have a local recording studio and ive earned more than i spent on buying these
