Product description

Color:Black

The NT-USB is a highly versatile side-address microphone that is ideal for recording singing and musical performances in addition to spoken applications such as podcasting and voice-over. It is fully compatible with all mainstream recording applications on both Windows and Mac OS based computers, as well as the Apple iPad using Rode Rec, Garage Band, or any other recording app that accepts an external microphone. Use on the Apple iPad requires a suitable USB connection adaptor, such as the Apple Camera Connection Kit. The body of the NT-USB features a zero-latency stereo headphone monitoring (3.5mm) jack, which allows you to monitor the microphone input in real-time, along with dials to adjust the monitoring level and mix between the computer/iPad audio and the microphone input. A premium pop-filter is included, which fits onto the base of the mic, positioning the filter the ideal distance from the capsule to minimize plosives (hard 'B', 'T' or 'P' sounds that produce a harsh sound) during singing or speech. Also provided is a high-quality stand mount with industry standard 3/8" thread, desktop tripod stand that allows the NT-USB to sit at a comfortable height on a tabletop, and a pouch for storage of the microphone when not in use. Compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, as well as the Apple iPad via the USB camera connection kit (available directly from Apple) Gain setting: When the gain is set too high, the microphone will be too sensitive and can pick up room noise that can even be heard as a hiss. When the gain is set too low, the microphone will be barely audible. Compatible with the SMR shockmount & WS2 foam windshield.

By Ryan Williams on June 6, 2016
I work as an Instructional Designer, and occasionally have to narrate E-Learning's or short instructional videos. I have a home office and a corporate office location. Originally I was using my Blue Yeti USB microphone, with the Radius II shock mount attached to the PSA1 Studio Arm. This set up worked great, but it sucked having to move it from office to office. So I decided to get a second set up. After a lot of research for what would best fit my needs, I went for this set up.

I now have a Rode NT-USB microphone attached to the SM6 Shock Mount, all on the PSA1 Studio arm.

What I really like is that the microphone is actually suspended with the SM6 shock mount, so it reduces a lot of noise that the microphone pics up.

I am not a professional Audio Engineer, and have been learning about all this on my own. However, I am a professional looking for great narration. This product fits my needs and my budget. In comparison to the Blue Yeti/Radius II set up I have, this is slightly better. There is slightly more control with this microphone than the Blue Yeti for Unidirectional sound. The Blue Yeti works great, and has a few functions this Microphone does not. For basic narration, where you only want to pick up sound/voice from one direction this mic is better.

I use this microphone with Audacity, and Storyline 2 for software. It works great, and produces a high quality sound that I need to engage learners.
I would buy this product again.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect companion for voice over artists
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 24, 2018
Incredibly pleased with it.

I bought this microphone mainly for voice over work (being a professional voice over artist). I researched both online and via personal recommendation for a USB microphone suited to life on the road and this came out on top for both quality and price. I was not disappointed.

Packaging was pretty neat and it came with a gorgeous leather pouch for transport and an “I love Rode” sticker.

One of the best things about this mic is that set-up up was really straight forward, I just plugged the Microphone into the USB cable and into the MacBook and both Garage Band and Audacity recognized it instantly.

The design is very solid and feels very hardy, and the fact it comes with both ‘screw in’ stand and pop shield included is great, as most other companies will screw you for these as an added extra. The cable is really long too, something which should come as a standard more often, yet is infuriatingly often lacking, again meaning the punter has to fork out more cash. Rode seem to get what people want!

The sound is ideal for what I need, incredibly sensitive in low-noise environments but equally adapted to deal with Brian Blesseds amongst us. The sensitivity of this mic could potentially be an issue for those in non-insulated environments but nothing a little noise gating and compression can’t fix. It will really accentuate your natural tones, not mask them, It’s the perfect companion for voice over artists.

PROS:
The length of the USB cable
Pop shield and stand included.. Win win !
Hardy design
Great audio quality
No need for an interface, signal conversion hardware within microphone itself

CONS:
The fact that I didn’t discover this microphone sooner
Very sensitive, found I needed to noise gate post-production

Pleasantly surprised is the best way to describe this product.

I have been doing video game reviews on Youtube for a while now and whilst I later began to use a shotgun mic connected to a Tascam DR40 via XLR input, it became a lot easier for me to just simply use a Turtle Beach USB-based gaming headset to record them instead due to not having to convert the signal and transfer the files (something you'd think wasn't that big a deal until you consider that you have to play the game, write the script, record the footage, record the voice-over and edit the whole package), and bearing in mind some of the videos were an almost an hour long documentary. The Turtle Beach had a lot of background noise for every recording I did and though I also have a Blue Yeti, I was never satisfied with the sound of my voice on that particular device. Cue me getting mightily sick of having to edit out the background noise for every video, and eventually happening upon the NT-USB which is in my view an incredible piece of kit.

The sound is really quite incredible given its price and also given that it's connected via USB - no need to covert the signal for it's all done inside the device. Happy days!

I'd describe the sound as mellow though quite pronounced compared to other mics I have used in the past. If you're looking for a mic that accentuates your voice, then this is the one for you. On top of this it also has incredible low noise capabilities (something I found was sorely lacking in the Blue Yeti), a really long lead - which I'd rather have than one that was too short, a stand and a pop filter. It's also incredibly well packaged and made of solid metal construction as you would expect from Rode.

I really like this mic, and it has been a significant step up for the quality of the video tutorials that I do. However, it's important to note that this is a cardoid mic, so it will pick up a lot of background noise. If you are working in a fairly quiet space, then it is absolutely excellent. However, if you have a bit of background noise, then I would recommend that you look into the Samson Q9U or any other Dynamic USB microphone. I myself had only realised the importance of shuffling background noise after I bought this excellent mic, as my recording space is unfortunately my kitchen, where the mic picks up the fridge on the other side of the room.

Update: I have a new studio space which isn't my kitchen, and this is my preferred mic when I wish to capture more emotion. I have since acquired two dynamics mics - ATR2100 that I use as my daily driver and a Rode Podmic with a USB interface. Compared to those two mics, the sound of the NT-USB is much warmer, livelier and more full spectrum. It's less bassy than the Dynamic mics.

I have children and I hear the occasional car passing in front of my window, so in my case for most instances I still prefer dynamic mics due to the inherent noise rejection.

The only missing feature is gain level knob on the mic.

Yet, once again, if you have an acoustically treated room, and a fairly quiet ambience, then this is a great plug and play mic.
