Product description
VideoMic Me Directional Microphone for Smartphones. The VideoMicro is a compact microphone designed to improve the audio quality of your videos. There is a bit of conventional wisdom that goes something like, "Half of good video is good audio." And it’s true. Say you’re recording a video of a live performance. Who cares if the band looks like they’re cooking if it doesn’t sound great; The VideoMicro incorporates a high-quality cardioid condenser microphone capsule for great quality audio recordings when used with a wide range of cameras. The VideoMicro reduces distracting peripheral sounds and focuses on the audio in front of the camera. Its pickup is more forgiving than other on-camera microphones, providing a more natural sound when recording indoors. The microphone body is made from aluminum, giving it a high level of RF rejection, and is finished in RODE's high-grade ceramic anti-glare black coating. Included with the VideoMicro is a camera shoe mount featuring a Rycote Lyre shockmount. Featuring a suspension structure composed of a rugged thermoplastic, it is far more effective at minimizing unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than traditional elastic suspensions. The Rycote Lyre will never sag, snap, wear out or require rethreading to maintain its effectiveness. Also included is the WS9 synthetic furry wind screen with foam inner cell, designed for use in outdoor scenarios where wind and environmental noise can inhibit recordings. >>>>> I use a small cord extender (leftover from my old Lifeproof case), and then CLAMP the mic onto the male end of the Apple charger plug. ***See images attached.
ADD A LITTLE DUCT TAPE to the male-end for better grip, and it’s VERY sturdy.
Audio quality is great. Comes with wind shield for outdoor. Worth the money. Ignore the haters, no <$300 mic is perfect.
The best camera/mic is the one you’ll keep with you and actually USE. This is small and useful enough with no needed battery - and an audio OUT port to plug headphones into (for monitoring and testing sound).
I also have the full sized Rhodes mic, and it’s not practical for cellphone on-the-go videos.
Buy this, especially at 35% off at the time of this review.

Only used it on two smartphones thus far both Samsung J3's of different years.
What I don't like about it:
I have to turn off Data connection and go into Airplane Mode to use it. With data on there is interference in the audio making it unusable. That means I cannot use this to do a livestream video feed outside of a wifi zone while on the move.
Not always connected, you have to really push the 3.5mm all the way into the jack so it registers. This more a problem while on the move. The included spacer that's fits to the back next to the 3.5mm jacks fails keeping it secure to the phone thus my mic dropped a few times.
Doesn't stay secure with most phone case designs well it is secure to a degree when using the back facing camera, not the front facing camera.
What I like:
It is small, compact.
The headphone jack is there in case I want to review via wired connection. Bluetooth from another device works no problem.
Despite the limitations, as long as I keep data off, have it on a stationary mount. The sound recorded from it is usable. I guess the only option for what I do on the go may as well use the GO model instead with the mic a distance a way attached via cable on an external mount. Don't own that model.
The ME is still in my kit, sadly cannot use it for what I intended that being livestream on the move.
--small, convenient size
--decent sound quality that does seem to reduce ambient background noise
--attaches to 1/8" headphone/mic jack
--does not require its own batteries
--windscreen included but detachable
--pass-thru headphone jack included
Cons:
--really only designed to mount perpendicularly to the phone/device at one angle towards front or back, but no flexibility up or down
--sound level is quieter than using the native onboard mic on my device
--the windscreen is HUGE and gets in the way
--on my particular device (Samsung Note 4) the camera is very close to the headphone jack, so the mic often appears in the shot (especially with the windscreen in place)

So, i went on and bought this mic despite the negative reviews here. And i am glad i ignored them!
First of all i am not giving the full 5 stars because of the deceiving description thus some of the negative reviews. The box states clearly that this mic is meant for Apple products ONLY. I don't know if it has to do with the software but definitely has to do with the position on your mic's jack. So yes it is not meant for phones that the camera is next to the mic jack, when it comes to this feature at least , as i don't know (but probably won't matter but..) what can be the problem with other phone's software to use this mic.
When it comes to performance it definitely deserves the whole 5 stars and more. Don't trust someone's hearing ability to decided! Trust your own ears and that is what youtube videos are for. And there is a plethora of reviews for that brand and for the specific mic and they can't ALL be sponsored to support them nor all to be lying nor to be incapable of hearing!
I didn't want to spend a huge amount of money for a mic for everyday vlogging and i hate wires! The price is to be taken seriously here as this is not an amount of money you wouldn't be upset to throw down the drain if not happy so do your research depending on your needs! Amazon's policy with returns and all the reviews and test fields from so many people on youtube about this brand made me give it a go.
At the end of the day i could have tried it and if not happy return it but that is not happening for me with this mic and i am so glad i went the extra money for a well-known brand so i dont have to return anything now to get the well-known brand at the end!
The microphone comes with a wind muffler to reduce wind noise. This is effective, but doesn't fit as tightly as I would like - I am genuinely worried at times ti will fall off if I'm tipping the mic forwards so might look at other attachment methods.
The clipping method is brilliant and works flawlessly on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. I also use this with my DJI Osmo Gimbal so have bought an extension cable to mount the microphone onto the gimbal instead.
Directional audio has vastly improved the sound quality and allows me to focus the audio recording on the subject of the video and cut out a lot of background cars or chatter.
Overall I highly recommend this if you plan on using your videos for anything more than home use. Audio is hard to fix in post production so getting it right first time is a life saver.
I was actually looking for an On Off switch as the audio was so poor, much worse than the phones built in microphone, I wouldnt mind but this has been highlighted many times on line, unfortunately I didnt see the very poor feedback for this microphone, some problems going back for more than two years which they clearly couldnt be botherd to resolve.
Unreliable, complete video blog scrapped because the microphone just did not record, the list goes on and on, WIFI and bluetooth interferance and more all reported.
It seems incredible they would say this will work with all Smart phones and clearly havent even checked it out first, pathetic comes to mind.
This was tried on a S8+, S7 Edge and IPhone, it never worked properly on any of them...
as I said, rubbish... !!
I used one of these a few years ago when the college I was working at bought some. Initially I was impressed. The improved directionality and 'focus' from what is essentially a mini shotgun mic was notably better than my phone or the college's iPads could capture internally.
Since then I've bought a new phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 10+) and its mics are much cleverer than those on the iPad Air, to the point that doing an A/B test of this versus an internal phone mic recording showed very little difference. While it was noticeably better through the Røde, the difference only presented itself through professional-grade reference headphones (when I'm just recording little demos on my phone, I don't usually plug in headphones at all - let alone the big fragile expensive ones).
I think that's the main problem with this mic. For the kinds of things I'm likely to record with it it's less convenient to have to plug it in every time - so much so that after a few weeks I think I'd just not bother. Not to mention that my phone (and most others these days) doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack, so it's dangling off a 1" dongle cable.
As for its main role as a video mic, on a device that has a headphone jack it does clip on nicely and point at your subject, ignoring lots of surrounding noise...but my phone's mic is just as good. The Røde's larger diaphragm definitely helps in terms of frequency range, but for acoustic instruments and vocals it makes little difference.
This is not a bad microphone. I got it for £40 and would've kept it if my phone weren't so good as to make it superfluous.
